06/30/2002 Archived Entry: "Luke on Solstice and Art Cars"

Luke McGuff, in his Bob Loblaw pseud ("blah blah blah", get it?) has posted his report on Fremont Solstice Parade and Art Car whing-ding activities. "This year's parade was astounding. We had more than 60 cars, of all kinds and stripes. Some daily drivers (like Raven), some heavily re-shaped bodies (Playa Jitney, the red shoe, earful) and many more. One couple came all the way from Daytona Beach, FL, in their car, Holey Merc'a'toy'd. 'Five days on the road and thirty four hundred twenty five miles.' It reminded me of a Ben Hecht essay, where he runs into someone driving across country (this is in the 19-teens, I think). Fascinated by the idea of that kind of adventure, Ben approaches the man and tries to talk with him. Alas, all the man can talk about is the flat tires, the hours driving, etc. Nothing about the people he met or the sights he saw. Hah!"

Luke also links to these photos taken by Karl. I especially like the aboriginal-stylee designs on our friend Art Widner's car, seen here and here.
