07/01/2002 Archived Entry: "Body Blues"

I didn't think too much of this Body Blues thing when they ran some coverage on local news, but I was more impressed after hearing the doctors involved talk on KUOW (includes mp3, not just RA!). What is the Body Blues? "Too much of the time, you feel tired, tense, or irritable. You know you should exercise more, but you can rarely summon the motivation. What may bother you the most, however, is that you eat too much---especially in the second half of the day. Due to your low energy and eating habits, you may be significantly overweight, which increases your risk of health problems, detracts from your appearance, and undermines your self-esteem." There's a quiz if you are into self-diagnosis.

The good part is that the treatments that helped in the study are easy, not expensive, and I don't think would do you any harm.

  1. Getting 20 minutes of moderate intensity outdoor exercise, five or more days a week.

  2. Increasing their light exposure during the daytime.

  3. Taking a unique combination of the following six vitamins and minerals: vitamins B-1, B-2, B-6, folic acid, vitamin D and selenium. (Most of the doses are higher than those found in one-a-day multi-vitamin tablets, but all are well within safe limits.)
