03/20/2003 Archived Entry: "March Blog Meetup Report"

We had a blog meetup last night, despite the war starting and all. I got to the Elliot Bay Bookstore cafe a bit early because I was hungry and knew I wanted some food. A grilled cheese sandwich was more than five bucks! Tasty, but the only side or garnish was a handful of goldfish crackers sprinkled over. Coke was two dollars a bottle because it was imported from Mexico (cane sugar instead of corn syrup) so I just drank water. A few minutes after seven, I found out that I wasn't the only weblogger there -- Beth was sitting a little ways away, and Timm walked up and spoke to her, asking "Weblogs?" So we gathered in the corner of that brick-arched basement. Matt, Tara, TYD, Jessamyn, Jacob, Jeff, Michael, Kayne, and Jerry were all present, along with one guy who was very quiet and didn't give his name (Update: Brian). He and Jerry seemed to know each other so maybe we'll find out that way. Michael and Matt turned out to be online acquaintences from way back but had never met before. Matt was a bit less talkative than the last time he met with us, but I knew that with Jessamyn in the group he wouldn't be the only one talking -- she's very good at spreading the conversation around and asking people questions.

The cafe closed at nine and they kicked us out, so we thrashed around Pioneer Square for a short time until Jessamyn pointed us to the Pioneer Square Saloon on Yesler. It's attached to a Best Western hotel, but it's not a faked-out hotel bar, but a very simple tavern with room for groups to talk. There were about eight of us, since a few bailed out when we changed venues (that always happens). If we met there again I'd suggest going into the other room for easier hearing -- the music wasn't that loud, but the acoustics made it difficult to hear hear folks five feet away. Haake Beck was only a dollar! I think the bartender giving me a good deal.

I need to get my journal revived to do detailed reports, but this is a start.

So the school will have a different schedule after it moves to Fremont?

If we get ourselves going on non-meetup organized gatherings, maybe you'll be able to join in.

I still have Russian class on Wednesdays (though just one more semester--the school moves to Fremont after that), but it's great that you all write up the meetup so I can see who was there and check out their blogs!
