05/14/2003 Archived Entry: "KUOW to cover Weblogs"
Seattle NPR station KUOW (I'm still mad that they've dropped Talk of the Nation. Weasels!) is doing an hour about weblogs tomorrow, in the 9 AM Weekday slot. Matthew Baldwin of Defective Yeti will be featured. Today is the day to email them with your thoughts on the weblog phenomenon (hint: online journals and weblogs aren't the same thing), how weblogs are useful to you, etc. How to explain weblogs to those who haven't caught the bug yet? There might be some special guests on the show.

Elaine, your email was read but I didn't have the chance to interject and say, "hey, I know Elaine!" I was happy with the show as a whole -- I'll try to listen to it when the archive is available. I didn't feel too nervous.

Hey, Anita! Listening to you right now...

Anita, I did email kuow, thanks.
Also, I disagree about TOTN--I think it sucked since Ray Suarez left. But I do love Science Friday--have you seen Ira Flato's show on PBS--"Big Ideas?"

josie, if you want them to know about particular weblogs, you need to tell them, today. (I heard Steve Scher correct a statement about "online weblogs" just a few minutes ago.)
Junio, I don't mind if they want to add *other* shows but they should keep TOTN, esp since the current host Neal Conan is good (after the doldrums of whatzizname). Plus we lose Science Friday if we lose TOTN!

This (last item) might be part of the reason for KUOW's not returning to Talk of the Nation. (Even though I work at one of the parties involved, I have no idea if this is true; it's just a possibility that occurs to me.) The Seattle Weekly also ran a little squib (second item) on this subject last week.

I'm guessing they will only be showing the vanilla blogs, and steering away from locally produced Peep Show Stories and American Samizdat . . . Instead, people who talk about what time they got up in the morning and when they brushed their teeth will probably be highlighted . . .

Good, I'll forward what I sent them to you (just a selection of local and other blogs, and a statement about the difference between weblogs and journals).
Are you the only guest for the hour?
