08/03/2003 Archived Entry: "Anita Bora Googly"

My namesake Anita Bora (she's got her own domain now) has a feature article posted on rediff.com, a portal in India, about Google trying to serve a default Hindi page to Indian users -- they've since switched back. "Suresh points out that a) most of India's online population is English literate, b) Hindi is not a language that's spoken by a huge number of Indians and c) several people prefer English on the whole. 'No. It's not a very good move on Google's part.'" The article's title is a clever pun! A googly, a type of cricket throw, is like a screwball knuckleball pitch in baseball. I'll edit the description of a googly, thanks Ram! (I remembered that what I was thinking of is called a knuckleball anyway, not a screwball.)

Actually the Googly that she refers is the one in cricket.

Cricket is much more popular in India than baseball. :-)
