01/26/2004 Archived Entry: "Home Voyeur"
Jack laughs at me because I'm curious about the decor and home interiors that are visible to me when we are walking around in Seattle, but Jeanmari1 of House in Progress is also a home voyeur! "We NEVER WANTED to see people. In fact, that ruins the effect. Because the point is, of course, projecting yourself into these different habitats and trying them on for size in your imagination. Which house would 'fit' you? The best houses for viewing leave all of their lights on and you can just peek inside lighted windows and see kitchens, stairways, living rooms, ceiling lights... dreaming, assessing and thinking of what you might do differently."

Hey! I do that too, and my husband thinks it's weird too. It's spiffy to see how other people have their spaces and stuff arranged.

I suffer from a variation on this ailment: Whenever someone is photographed or filmed in front of a bookcase, I become obsessed with trying to see hat books are on the shelf. Often I've missed the substance of a documentary interview because I was too focused on trying to tell which Chomsky title was to the left of the speaker's ear.

If critiquing other people's decor is wrong, I don't want to be right!
