01/27/2004 Archived Entry: "Mozart's Birthday"
What does it mean that the category (Dmoz) link that turns up on Google when I search on "Mozart" and "birthday" is for Ludwig van Beethoven? Anyway, today is Mozart's and Charles Dodgson's birthday so make of that what you will, horoscope-wise. Homeschool info to celebrate Mozart's birthday with! I'll celebrate by viewing The Magic Flute, Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni or Cosi fan Tutte, all of which are on my favorite operas list. Ooo, this Magic Flute book and CD version (can be sampled online) looks very tempting, though spendy.

I have the Bergman on laserdisc and DVD. I also have (or had) taped-off-the-air Glyndebourne and Met productions, both using David Hockney design. I say "had" because it was a long time ago that I taped them and I haven't checked recently to see if they still play!
My favorite Figaro was one with Benjamin Luxon as the Count. I'd taped that back when A&E used to show operas! I also have laserdisc versions by Peter Sellars and Opera de Lyons.
I've seen the Sellars Don Giovanni but don't own it (two lucious black twins play the Don and Leporello). I think I have a few taped versions, one with Samuel Ramey that I liked.
I do have the Sellars Cosi, set in a diner at the New Jersey shore. I love much better the tape I made of Jonathan Miller's for-tv production with Ashley Putnam in English. I've never seen that one offered for sale. Another VHS tape that is getting old, I fear.

Mmm, I love Bergman's Zauberflöte -- I may have to pop that in tonight myself. Which versions of the other operas do you have? I've been looking for passable performances to add to the video library, as well as a Zauberflöte auf Deutsch.
When I was in college we performed it in English, using puppets, which was a lot of fun; unfortunately, the libretto we used doesn't seem to be the common one and I haven't seen hide nor hair of it since (though I've looked).
