06/12/2004 Archived Entry: "Unexpected Knitting"

I've requested the book Unexpected Knitting from the library. There's a great profile on author Debbie New in the Globe and Mail: "As inspirations, Ms. New cites moods, techniques, a challenge -- or a deadline. Her creation Sweet Recollections was solicited by Ms. Gelenter for the Arte de Descartes gallery show in Taos. The only stipulation was that the entry be fashioned from recycled materials. Ms. New constructed a cape, a collage of candy wrappers on knitted cotton backing, secured by recycled tape. She placed second, and filled the gallery with the smell of chocolate. Her Armored Vest won the contest it was made for. Each entrant was required to knit exactly the same vest, making for easy judging. Ms. New followed the pattern down to the last stitch, but then, as described in her book, she 'dipped the vest in Durobond, wore it until it was dry (not recommended), attached hardware and sprayed it with gold paint. The vest fits me well and is hinged for access and egress.'"
