06/21/2004 Entry: "John B. Rowland"
I think of my father every time Connecticut Governor John Rowland is mentioned on the news -- because that was my father's name! I don't think we are related at all closely, though. My dad was born and grew up in Oregon, then did some traveling. During World War II the Army sent him to Brazil, where he mapped the Amazon jungle! (I always wondered if that was a cover story, but it fits with his later career in the USGS.) He worked on computer stuff at the USGS during the sixties and seventies. After his retirement he traveled and painted, but still always carried a calculator which got smaller and smaller with each replacement. His last one was about one inch by two inches, and dangled on a chain around his neck.

The only other person I've ever heard of who shares your name was an early 20th-century baseball player, manager, and executive named Clarence "Pants" Rowland. It appears that he got his nickname when his first minor league team gave him pants that were too large and they fell down.

Governer John Rowland's wife's name is Patricia, I think. Weird.
