01/15/2005 Entry: "Situation Much Better"

My computer situation has been tough lately. First there was a hardware problem several weeks ago, when the machine I was using died. I was able to use another machine on our network for web stuff, but mail had to be done through my shell account with no spam filtering, and I'd neglected to export my SharpReader subscriptions. This last became especially significant when Weblogs.com stopped updating on January 9, so I couldn't tell which of the blogs I like to read had updated. I was recreating my RSS subscriptions on the laptop (Jack's old one) that I'll get to use now but it's a slow process.

Then the good stuff started! We bought a new box via woot (woot is cool -- one bargain a day, posted at 10 pm) and my old hard drive was able to be transferred yesterday. Thanks, Jack! A new machine at a low price, much faster than what I was using before.

And Weblogs.com seems to be back, updating a large portion of the day if not 24/7. Things are looking up!

Jack has an Ice Cube also and likes it (except that his power supply crapped out recently). The Ice Brick doesn't have room for many added cards, thus the cheap price.

That Ice Brick looks pretty cool (groan)....

Actually, I bought a similar computer from Woot a few months ago, the Ice Cube (FIC VL-67) that they mention in the Ice Brick write-up, and I've been very happy with it. It's sitting next to me now, running Linux, serving up MP3s to all the Macs in the house via daapd and howl, and serving as an application server for decoding digital radio signals with an application I haven't been able to get to work on Mac OS X. I've also added an nVidia video card and PCHDTV high-def TV tuner card to the box and am trying to turn it into a PVR, but that's turning out to be a bit more difficult than expected. Still, it's a neat little computer.

I've decided that Weblogs is hopeless. The vast majority of the time I update Slumberland it never appears in your blogroll. But I do see it in other services (I use PingOMatic to ping them all); it's just Weblogs.com that doesn't work most of the time.
