02/18/2005 Entry: "Sweet Drinks Considered Harmful?"

Via Dangerous Meta, a study from the CDC says "sweet drinks -- whether Kool-Aid with sugar or all-natural apple juice -- seem to raise the risk of pudgy preschoolers getting fatter." Seems likely! I usually give my grandson fruit instead of juice, but I'll try to be more consistent about this. More in a CNN story. The original article in Pediatrics journal.

When we took care of foster children, it became clear the increased hyperactivity (and increased incontinence) of children who were allowed to run around with bottomless bottles of apple juice. I was, frankly, surprised by the obesity results. But they are putting more high fructose corn syrup in things these days, so maybe it's not so strange.
