I like this detailed appreciation of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends by Paul Victor Novarese at Gammatron.
Neurotic Personalities
- Gordon: arrogant alpha male
- Henry: hypochondriac worrywart
- James: vain, metrosexual attention-hungry show-off
- Thomas: suck-up brown-noser sycophant
- Edward: old man, nervous about the young rascals displacing him
- Percy: worker bee
- Toby: just trying to avoid the scrap heap
All of them, of course, are obsessed with being "Really Useful" and are maniacal, to the point of self-destructiveness, in pursuit of this unattainable ideal.

True.
Although he was always my favourite engine... ohhh I'm sure there is some psychoanalysis in there somewhere..

The name coincidence? I'm sure most guys named Gordon are nothing like Gordon the express engine.

Hmmm that's slightly worrying.

My grandson still digs it at 3 years and a bit. Dragon Tales is also very popular.
Gammatron is certainly correct about the emphasis on "knowing your place" in Thomas. Maybe it's a British thing?

My boys were entranced by Thomas when they were younger; we had a lot of the metal/plastic trains, and a set of wooden ones with tracks as well.
