I like this detailed appreciation of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends by Paul Victor Novarese at Gammatron.

Neurotic Personalities

• Gordon: arrogant alpha male
• Henry: hypochondriac worrywart
• James: vain, metrosexual attention-hungry show-off
• Thomas: suck-up brown-noser sycophant
• Edward: old man, nervous about the young rascals displacing him
• Percy: worker bee
• Toby: just trying to avoid the scrap heap

All of them, of course, are obsessed with being "Really Useful" and are maniacal, to the point of self-destructiveness, in pursuit of this unattainable ideal.

The name coincidence? I'm sure most guys named Gordon are nothing like Gordon the express engine.

My grandson still digs it at 3 years and a bit. Dragon Tales is also very popular.

Gammatron is certainly correct about the emphasis on "knowing your place" in Thomas. Maybe it's a British thing?

My boys were entranced by Thomas when they were younger; we had a lot of the metal/plastic trains, and a set of wooden ones with tracks as well.
