05/30/2007 Entry: "Putney Interviews Beverley"
One of my favorite romance authors, Mary Jo Putney, interviews another of my favorites, Jo Beverley, about her new book titled Lady Beware. Both have written series of romances where the characters are tied together in various ways. The interview is at Word Wenches, a group blog composed of romance writers.
MJP: What conclusions have you reached about writing long series?JB: That it's the ideal way to go if an author enjoys world building, but daunting if one thinks about it. (But then so is writing a novel. It took me years to get the guts to sit down and start work on something that might not be finished for a year.) Even just writing a story for each Rogue meant ten novels (though in the end I didn't write one about Hal, but wove his story in with the rest.) Ten novels is a life's work to some authors. So I'm not sure anyone could or should set out to do it. Put like that, I suppose my whole writing life is flying into the mist! It was great to move into the post-Rogues phase, to not have threads to tie up anymore. Even though there are Rogues in Lady Beware and a Rogue connection, all the pivotal events rise from Darien's family and history. That was writerly fun.

Last night I was reading MJP's latest, The Marriage Spell, and stayed up much too late. It's got magic during the Regency. For some reason I'm liking it much more than her earlier paranormal-historical which I think I didn't finish.
Both Putney and Beverley are well worth rereading which is why they are keepers for me.

Although I was glad to learn that Lady Beware was out, it led to a considerable productivity black hole for me as I not only read it, but ending up rereading quite a bit from many of her past books.
