06/08/2007 Archived Entry: "Barclay Lake and Deception Falls"
(Flickr set) Last weekend Jack, grandson R, and I went hiking with Jack's coworker Jason, his wife, and their two small boys. We had a good time! First we drove up to the Skykomish Ranger station (that part always takes longer than you think it will) and got updated trail conditions. Jason needed to buy a parking pass, but then he really didn't have to buy it for that day because it was National Trails Day.
Our first hike of the day was Deception Falls Nature trail, a short hike with interpretive signs. There was still some flood damage so we had to double back rather than complete the loop. I did have to stop and rest from time to time, especially during uphill sections. I'm afraid I got rather cross with Jack because his anxious inquiries felt like more pressure! But I know he meant it for the best. He did take some macro images of Cornus canadensis at my request. Common name bunchberry, it's a relative of the dogwood tree. I've tried to grow this in our shaded front yard but it didn't survive.
Our longer hike of the day was to Barclay Lake (A description by James LaJocies). It's about a five-mile round trip with some up-and-down but not much overall elevation gain. We were there later in the day so the crowds weren't too bad, but it's a very popular hike! I was glad I pushed through to the lake. Jack and R took off their shoes and dipped their feet in the very cold water. The walk back was easier because the general trend was downhill in that direction. We had dinner at the Buzz Inn in Monroe on the way back to Seattle.

Sounds like you had a wonderful day. What a great chance to get out and enjoy

I wouldn't exactly call the Buzz Inn 'charming'...
Basically it is a steakhouse chain with minimal service, a limited menu, good food, and truly excellent prices. (A full steak dinner with a beer runs around $15.)
They have several locations in outlying communities to the north of Seattle. Their customers tend towards cowboys and blue collar types. I enjoy stopping there, but then I have low tastes. :-)

I didn't eat much of my dinner (stuff sometimes doesn't taste good to me because of chemo) but I have liked the food there in the past! It's a small chain so the other locations might be easier to get to.
