08/31/2007 Archived Entry: "Worldcon Day 1"

Jack wrote a good post about our first full day in Yokohama attending Nippon2007 aka the World Science Fiction Convention.

He didn't mention our buffet breakfast in our hotel, the Intercontinental The Grand Yokohama. It probably cost a bit more than we should have paid, but the food was yummy! Bacon, eggs, fruit, pastries, with great service, too -- and all the ingredients for a Japanese-style breakfast if you are inclined that way. Two Buddhist monks were eating just across the room from us.

It's a shame that the Wifi at the con is not working at all well (and it's still fubared as of this writing). Makes me appreciate the guy who used to handle the net stuff at Orycon! So I think I'll be leaving my computer in the room instead of carrying it to the con space.

The only programming I attended today besides the opening ceremonies was the panel Jack did on the Future of Computing (I told him it beat my expectations, since that topic is prone to crackpottedness and there wasn't much in evidence) and Pat Cadigan's kaffeeklatch.
