Especially for my sister M---: The Capitol Hill Farmers Market is moving to what I would call Western Madrona! The corner of Union and MLK (parking lot of the home of bargains, Grocery Outlet) will be the new home; the time is Friday afternoons. Those who really live on Capitol Hill can still visit the Farmers Market at Broadway and Thomas on Sunday mornings.

Manuel Wanskasmith signed up last year to go along on the next inspection tour of the Viaduct. You could sign up, too. Says Manuel, "Go to the WSDOT Viaduct web page and use the email address in the 'Project Status' box, ask them when the next one is and when you should email them to reserve a spot on the next tour. It fills up pretty fast so if you can get on the list now or well in advance do it." They said it was all filled up, but recently WSDOT contacted him and said there was an opening. He's got a great set of pictures of Saturday morning's trip.

My sister and I went to see the Met Opera HD broadcast (or would you call it narrowcast?) of The First Emperor a few months ago and enjoyed it. Tomorrow we are going to see Rossini's Barber of Seville, a funny, tuneful, and familiar opera, at the Bella Bottega theater in Redmond (doors open at 10 am, show starts at 10:30 am) and going to Than Brothers Pho in Redmond afterwards (around 2 pm). The movie is 18 bucks but worth it, and I'll buy your pho!

Joey Accordion Guy deVilla has posted some entertaining pictures using images from the 300 movie. I laughed at these and I haven't even seen it! Part 1, Part 2.

On the Seattle LiveJournal Community, there's a post with pictures of some mysterious walls and things "on Delmar Drive, where it intersects Interlaken Blvd., very close to where 520 and I-5 connect." Do you know what they are? "It's definitely not a tennis court, although it looks like it, sort of. It's really dense Astroturf-like green stuff and no net. Plus there's the big poles on one end, and the big metal boxes at the other end."

Mely (Coffee and Ink on LJ) reminded me that I read Carla Kelly's latest Regency novel, Beau Crusoe, last week. Carla Kelly is one of my keeper authors, very entertaining! (I've blogged about her before.) I'm glad that Harlequin Historical did get around to publishing this novel after all. I think I mostly agree with Rachel's review -- there's more sex than I would have expected and the story gets a bit unbalanced, but it's very worth buying and reading. Look, a new interview with Carla Kelly!
Q. How did you think of writing this particular book? Did it start as a character, a setting, or some other element?
A. It started as a setting, and then the "what if" took over. Several years ago, I read Tony Horwitz's marvelous book, Blue Latitudes: (subtitled – I think – 'Going boldly where Captain Cook has gone before.') Horwitz followed Capt. James Cook's first voyage in the Endeavor, as he went to Tahiti to observe the Transit of Venus. I was fascinated. Years earlier, I had seen an equally excellent mini-series of Cook and his voyages. And Thor Heyedahl's Kon-Tiki was the first book I read all night, under the covers with a flashlight. And then there is the towering figure of Sir Joseph Banks, a scientist. There's a theme here.(tags: RegencyRomance, CarlaKelly, CoffeeAndInk)

Jack and I were down in Portland last weekend, having fun at Potlatch! I confess I was tired, being post chemo and all, but it was worth the trip even thought Jack disapproved of me collapsing in bed on Saturday evening. We arrived in time for Lucy Huntzinger's hat and shiny thing party on Friday (picture of Ursula K LeGuin in her SFWA Grandmaster crown), and attended some programming and ventured to Powell's books on Saturday afternoon. We rode the MAX (Portland light rail) with Luke and Julie. They got off at the Saturday Market in search of chocolate. I agree with Mary Kay's opinion of the hotel food, though my taste buds were off due to chemo. I hope there will be some more reports posted soon! Potlatch really is my favorite con of all.

Who has joined Twitter? I did yesterday. Could be fun! But I need more friends. Kathy Sierra says: "For those of you who don't know about Twitter, it has one purpose in life--to be (in its own words)--A global community of friends and strangers answering one simple question: What are you doing? And people answer it. And answer it. And answer it. Over and over and over again, every moment of every hour, people type in a word, fragment, or sentence about what they're doing right then."

Kim Salazar of WiseNeedle (but her weblog on the site is called STRING OR NOTHING) devotes an entry to a bit about her current knitting projects and a lot about her Coach bag getting renovated. I'm a big fan of the leather Coach bags (not so much the cloth or vinyl ones). Your cost per use is very low even though the purses are expensive, because they last forever! Then you send them back to Coach and have them cleaned and fixed up for a nominal fee. (My renovation experience: February 9, 1998, March 30, 1998. Another Coach experience.) Says Kim:
Although I have a larger bag and a dressier bag for occasions that demand them, my little Coach has been the default handbag of choice for over a decade and a half. Needless to say that much daily wear took its toll. The binding around the edges was worn through at several spots, and the clasp had given up all hope of fulfilling its function. My bag was well loved, and looked it. Now Coach has tried to go a bit more trendy in styling and moved more upscale, expanding beyond the "do you want that in black, brown, or camel" mindset of my bag's day. You'd be hard pressed to find anything similar on their shelves now. But Coach bags are guaranteed for life. So I took my friend to a nearby stand-alone Coach store just after the holidays. My bag was so old that no one in the store recognized the style - not even the manager. I asked if they still repaired bags, and only the manager had an inkling of what I was talking about. But they verified the pedigree of my little guy via the serial number stamped into the inside pocket, and taking a shipping and handling fee (plus issuing a lot of "I don't know if it's fixable" type comments), sent it off for repair. Lo and behold, my little bag returned to me on Friday. Cleaned and somewhat refinished, with a new clasp, new edge bindings all the way around, and a new shoulder strap. All for the handling fee. My friend is back, and I'm very happy.
