Jessamyn couldn't buy herself an iPhone (because she lives in Vermont! can you imagine? But I don't know that she even wanted one.) so she went along with her friend Casey who was buying one in New Hampshire. She got some great recursive iPhone photos!

If, like me, you enjoy Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel, don't miss the new episode, Billboard Installer, tomorrow! Tuesday, 9 pm. There's a forum with a list of FAQs if you'd like to know more about Mike Rowe and the show. The Wikipedia article is a good resource, too.

Jack has joined the Clarion West Write-a-thon! This effort (like a walk-a-thon or, as Kira Franz said at the Clarion West reading the other night, any other "thing-a-thon") raises money for Clarion West by having folks pledge to contribute a certain amount of money if Jack meets his writing goals during the workshop. More details from Jack.

Clarion West (a workshop for science fiction and fantasy writers) has begun. It's like boot camp for these aspiring writers, with a different instructor each week. The public can attend readings by each instructor, Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm, at the Science Fiction Museum. And this year, it's free! The first instructor is Nancy Kress. Coming up in the future:
- June 26, 2007 - Larissa Lai
- July 3, 2007 - Graham Joyce
- July 10, 2007 - Kelley Eskridge
- July 17, 2007 - Patrick Nielsen Hayden
- July 24, 2007 - Samuel R. Delany

I've been laughing so much over the weekend, at this comics parody page drawn by a regular (he comments as Dean Booth) at the Comics Curmudgeon. Have you been disturbed by the alien skull shapes in Gil Thorp? Bothered by Julia's transformation to a star wars character in FOOB? Do you read Blondie? There is much richness here, but the Gil Thorp strips are my favorites.

Wednesday, June 20, it's the Seattle Weblog Meetup! Start time is 7 pm, location is Ralph's Grocery and Deli, 2035 4th Ave, in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood, diagonally across from the Cinerama. Free WiFi, food and drink available (you can buy anything in the store and consume it in the deli area, so that includes wine and beer if you want). Local and visiting webloggers talk about blog topics and lots else. Topic for the evening:??? (Do you have a suggestion?). I hope to see you there! Parking can be tight in the neighborhood but I usually find a space on Sixth or pay to park in the Warwick Hotel garage across the street for six bucks.

Has anyone in the Seattle area seen Shrek Green Cheetos recently? They are normal orange color but turn your tongue green. My grandson had them at a friend's house. Ever since, he asks me after eating something, "What color is my tongue now?" I resisted buying them, then gave in. But now I can't find them! I've looked at Safeway and Fred Meyer.
My buddy at Cruft, Michael Pusateri, now owns that search string, by the way -- he's number one at google for "shrek green cheetos." He's got some pictures of the results of eating the product. I see he bought them at 7-11 so I'll try there. Cruft has lots of food adventures, such as Burger King Tacos and the famous Turduckhen.

(Flickr set) Last weekend Jack, grandson R, and I went hiking with Jack's coworker Jason, his wife, and their two small boys. We had a good time! First we drove up to the Skykomish Ranger station (that part always takes longer than you think it will) and got updated trail conditions. Jason needed to buy a parking pass, but then he really didn't have to buy it for that day because it was National Trails Day.
Our first hike of the day was Deception Falls Nature trail, a short hike with interpretive signs. There was still some flood damage so we had to double back rather than complete the loop. I did have to stop and rest from time to time, especially during uphill sections. I'm afraid I got rather cross with Jack because his anxious inquiries felt like more pressure! But I know he meant it for the best. He did take some macro images of Cornus canadensis at my request. Common name bunchberry, it's a relative of the dogwood tree. I've tried to grow this in our shaded front yard but it didn't survive.
Our longer hike of the day was to Barclay Lake (A description by James LaJocies). It's about a five-mile round trip with some up-and-down but not much overall elevation gain. We were there later in the day so the crowds weren't too bad, but it's a very popular hike! I was glad I pushed through to the lake. Jack and R took off their shoes and dipped their feet in the very cold water. The walk back was easier because the general trend was downhill in that direction. We had dinner at the Buzz Inn in Monroe on the way back to Seattle.

Tuesday, June 5, it's the East Side Weblog Meetup. Weblog folks who live and/or work on the East side meet at Crossroads Mall (map and info). Look for us between the main area by the stage and the giant chessboard -- there will be a sign. Start time is 7 pm.

This is a very funny site/web service (via Metafilter) though I was expecting actual LOLCATS captions as well as pictures. Take any RSS feed and turn it into amusing (through random juxtapositions) cat images. Like mine! Things off of craigslist seem to be amusing (Santa Barbara Rants and Raves), or your favorite blog feed (Things that make you go hmm).
