My friend Jake of 8bit Joystick posts that he's been laid off due to funding cuts, and is looking for a job. "For the past five years I have been an Industrial/Commercial Graphic Artist at Raytheon IDS on the Interactive Multimedia Instructional Development Team At NAVSEA Keyport Undersea Warfare Center Division. My work at Keyport combined instructional illustration, interactive multimedia presentation, detailed technical simulations and delivering quality work on schedule. I have a degree from the Art Institute of Seattle, School of Visual Design and have worked in a team production environment for over seven years."

One of my favorite science fiction authors, Vernor Vinge (I've mentioned him before) is reading tonight, the final installment in this year's Clarion West reading series. We'll be there! Weather, family, and health issues kept us away from previous readings this year. Kate Schaefer has the details. It's very inexpensive (four bucks!), and will happen at 7:30 pm at the auditorium shared by the EMP and the SFM (Science Fiction Museum).

It sunk in on me Thursday afternoon, sitting on the counch with my grandson: Where is Melanie? Melanie Martinez is the host of the evening "Good Night" show on PBS Sprout, or at least she was. Today all the breaks between shows were filled with songs or other filler. Turns out she made a short independent video seven years ago, a humorous piece about teen abstinence. Now it's on the internet (language might be unsafe for work). She alerted her PBS bosses that the video was on the net, so they let her go. Seems a shame; she'd kind of grown on me since last fall (but I still haven't warmed up to the star puppet added recently).
Update: My friend Dylan of Client and Server posted about the story to Metafilter, so there's a longish comment thread there.(tags: MelanieMartinez, PBSSprout, GoodNightShow)

Wednesday, July 19, it's the Seattle Weblog Meetup! Start time is 7 pm, location is Ralph's Grocery and Deli, 2035 4th Ave, in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood, diagonally across from the Cinerama (map). There's free WiFi courtesy of Ralph's, and food and drink are available for purchase (you can buy anything in the store and consume it in the deli area, so that includes wine and beer if you want). Local and visiting webloggers talk about blog topics and lots else.

My friend Anita Bora (another Anita-named blogger) describes her feelings about Mumbai and the explosions there. "Close on the heels of the furore of the monsoons, it now has another terrorist attack to deal with. If it gives in, it’s broken. If it goes about its business, it’s uncaring. Sometimes, I think that it’s so unfair that a city that gives its residents so unselfishly, has to endure so much from some half crazed bunch of fools, who go about killing innocent people, for god knows what purpose. I can’t believe these people seriously think they’re sent to earth with a purpose to kill others. What kind of lunatics are they and what drives them? Not religion surely, because I don’t know any on earth that actually condones this kind of nonsensical, demented behaviour."

Next Tuesday, July 11 at 7 pm, it's the East Side Weblog Meetup! Weblog folks who live and/or work on the East side meet at Crossroads Mall. Look for us between the main area by the stage and the giant chessboard -- there will be a sign. Note: usually we are on the first Tuesday of the month, but I'm moving the meetup (this month only) to the second Tuesday because of the holiday.
Do you know any webloggers who live or work on the east side? Please forward this message to them.

I turned off comments for a few days while we were out of town on a camping trip. I knew I wouldn't have net access to prune away the spam! But now we are home and things are getting back to normal -- I still have a lot of stuff to put away, though!
Our original plan was to camp at Maryhill State Park on the Washington side of the Columbia River, along with members of Jack's family. But we didn't reserve a camping space in time! Jack's dad found another place for us, at Celilo Park in Oregon (picture by Lyn Topinka). This was a free camping area operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with a nice grass lawn and plenty of trees (and flush toilets!) Very breezy, which made the hot weather tolerable. We had a good time at both campgrounds, with plenty of swimming in the river for grandson R----.
Lyn Topinka's page about the area shows details of what it was like before the dam was built at the Dalles, inundating the Celilo Falls. No more fishing off the cliffs for the Indians!
We revisited the Maryhill Museum of Art (last seen by me in 2000) since our friend Jim Kling hadn't been there. But my favorite part, the Theatre de la Mode (fashion dolls created after WWII to revive the French fashion industry), was missing! Either it's on tour somewhere or was put in storage to make room for a current exhibit on Romanian folk life.
We also drove up at sunset one evening to see the Stonehenge replica. Better at twilight than in the intense sunlight of midday!
