Jack wrote a good post about our first full day in Yokohama attending Nippon2007 aka the World Science Fiction Convention.
He didn't mention our buffet breakfast in our hotel, the Intercontinental The Grand Yokohama. It probably cost a bit more than we should have paid, but the food was yummy! Bacon, eggs, fruit, pastries, with great service, too -- and all the ingredients for a Japanese-style breakfast if you are inclined that way. Two Buddhist monks were eating just across the room from us.
It's a shame that the Wifi at the con is not working at all well (and it's still fubared as of this writing). Makes me appreciate the guy who used to handle the net stuff at Orycon! So I think I'll be leaving my computer in the room instead of carrying it to the con space.
The only programming I attended today besides the opening ceremonies was the panel Jack did on the Future of Computing (I told him it beat my expectations, since that topic is prone to crackpottedness and there wasn't much in evidence) and Pat Cadigan's kaffeeklatch.

I've talked before about how much I love Coach bags (the older leather ones). Erin, author of A Dress A Day, feels the same way! "[T]he old Coach bags are something else. They have clean lines, neat colors, and even the most beat-up ones have a certain careless chic. In fact, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that old Coach bags are going to be the next big thing. What with the continuing 80s revival, can't you see a bunch of skinny Brooklyn hipsters deciding that these bags have huge ironic potential? You heard it here first."

Jack has posted some details on our itinerary for our trip to Japan. I just want to go, go, go! We'll be in Yokohama, Tokyo, Kyoto, with probable day trips to Nikko and elsewhere.

Grandson Riley decided to build himself some Lego glasses the other day. There are many Lego groups on Flickr!

We aren't checking luggage for our upcoming trip to Japan, so we need to sort out what toiletries we want to take with us that will pass TSA scrutiny these days. Luckily I'm not particular as to shampoo (very little hair on my head still), shower gel, or soap. Jack doesn't shave much, just trims his beard every now and then. I'll try for a small toothpaste tube of my favored Colgate Total. I could buy a kit at a travel-stuff store or container-store type place and fill it with stuff I already have. I must remember to pack meds also.

I'm in process of moving this site to Wordpress. But I didn't just want to use an existing theme! It bugs me if I don't understand what's happening underneath the covers. So I hunted around and found a great step-by-step tutorial. Author Small Potato did a good job of walking me through what I needed to do to write a theme that looks how I want it to and does what I want!

We had a good time at Wednesday's Seattle Weblog Meetup! There were new faces there, and old friends who have been missed. I've posted a few pictures to Flickr and the Meetup.com site. Those present:
- Clark Humphrey of MISCMedia
- John De Rosa of Trenchmice
- Joe Heck of Rhonabwy was on his iPhone a good portion of the time.
- John of A Short Letter Home returned to Seattle and the Weblog Meetup after two years in China! His report.
- Ken Brush of Shiruken visits us every now and then.
- Matthew of Codex Bohemia, aka Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, was new to the meetup.
- Ian Gilman has been to the meetup before.
- Alex M. Dunne is a long-time member, but grad school kept him busy until recently. He was at Gnomedex and was looking for other people's impressions of it.
- Beryl was curious about all the different blog types and media available today.
- Jack William Bell of iphonedojo.net did some photoblogging of the meetup (1, 2, 3). Our grandson R---- was also present, playing Inkball on my UMPC.
- And me!

Jack got me a new camera not long ago (a woot buy), so I used it over the weekend on our trip around the Olympic Peninsula and posted the images to Flickr. My first Set, awwww. The trip was fun and sleeping in our van works well for us. I think three nights might have been better than two -- I'd have liked to visit one of the many lavender farms up near Sequim.

Hey, shouldn't that be "Do's and Don't's" for consistency? My friend Jake of 8bit Joystick suggests some tips for those who play Xbox Live.
- Do make sure that all your downloads are done on other devices on your networks before playing. Note: As a personal note back when I first got Street Fighter 2 on Xbox Live Arcade I started playing it before quitting automatic podcast downloads on my Mac and then some folks that I played got some serious lag and gave me a "Quit early" complaint and it affected my rep and I will forever be regretful for causing bad lag for a Street Fighter match. There I feel much better now that is off my chest.
- Do use the mute button. Occasional side talk to other people is OK but if your going to carry on a conversation with someone else in the room, clear your throat or eat anything crunchy, talk on your cell phone then you should hit mute.
- Don't use the vision camera and then have it pointed in a place where you are not sitting or have the light out. It's a little creepy like they want to see you but not show themselves.
- Don't chew tobacco or anything that makes you spit excessively into a cup. That is right next to the microphone and we really don't want to hear it in our ears.

Wednesday, August 15, it's the Seattle Weblog Meetup! Start time is 7 pm, location is Ralph's Grocery and Deli, 2035 4th Ave, in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood, diagonally across from the Cinerama. Free WiFi, food and drink available (you can buy anything in the store and consume it in the deli area, so that includes wine and beer if you want). Local and visiting webloggers talk about blog topics and lots else. Maybe you can play with Jack's new iPhone! I hope to see you there! Parking can be tight in the neighborhood but I usually find a space on Sixth or pay to park in the Warwick Hotel garage across the street for six bucks.

Jack has a new project: iPhoneDojo.net! Right now he's posting as dojomaster. I'll be trying to post as well under my own name (though I don't have iPhone lust) and another friend (Eric of mysticalforest, known as seattlesensei on the new site) will be posting. Check it out!

Carnivorous Plants in Vegan Restaurant? That reminds me of Headless Body in Topless Bar! My friend Vicki Jean (I've mentioned her before) found a few examples in Portland OR.

At the fun blog called Risky Regencies (a long list of contributors for this group blog) they have a monthly feature called the Jane Austen Movie Club. This month, Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow. A good discussion in the comments! Margaret Evans Porter said, "As a rosarian speclialising in Tudor, Stuart, Georgian and Regency plants -- the outdoor scenes made me mental." Cara King said, "I think the difficulty -- well, one of the difficulties -- with adapting Emma is that Austen tends to do a lot of telling as well as showing -- and she often tells us one half of the equation, and shows us the other. So if you just go with the 'scenes' in the book, Emma can easily come out too unlikable."

Problems in a router table somewhere kept me from doing anything here for several days! Now it's been fixed (mostly) and I can see the site, get email, etc. Much better!
