My Archives: September 2006

Next Tuesday, October 3, it's the East Side Weblog Meetup! Weblog folks who live and/or work on the East side meet at Crossroads Mall. Look for us between the main area by the stage and the giant chessboard -- there will be a sign. Please pass the info along to any East Side webloggers you know!

Last night we watched the first half of Sharpe's Challenge on BBC America. (Will the second part be on next Monday? I saw no promotional ads for it, though surely every other BBC America show was blurbed multiple times!) IMDb says that this is a loose adaptation of three of Bernard Cornwell's Sharp novels: Sharpe's Tiger, Sharpe's Triumph, and Sharpe's Fortress. Some changes were necessary because the TV adaptations had started with Sharpe gaining his comission in Spain, not in India.

Jack thought this was filmed in Spain (a castle had that look to him), but the offical website says it was shot entirely in India. Worth watching, good production values, very entertaining so far.

We had fun at the September Weblog Meetup! Some new faces were there, along with old friends. Those present:

Since Avitania and Chad are relatively new to town, we talked a lot about Seattle, places to live, and such topics. Clark showed off the galleys of his new book, Vanishing Seattle, so I guess it's too late for contributions to this first edition. Maybe next time!

Next month I'd like to have an actual "talk" on a weblog-related topic as part of the meetup. Any ideas or requests?

This weekend we are going to Foolscap VIII, a small convention devoted primarily to the discussion of written science fiction and fantasy. They also include art and illustration. Lots of fun! C. J. Cherryh, one of my favorite authors, is the Writer Guest of Honor, and Mark Ferrari is the Artist Guest of Honor. Memberships are sixty bucks at the door. Location is the Bellevue Sheraton, 100 112th Avenue NE.

I've been reading Gwen for a long time, since she was living in a trailer park and writing How to be a Trailer Trash Housewife. Now she's in a house that she just bought, with her boys. The neighbor girls invaded the other night. "It was two little girls. They were sisters. Before I knew what was happening, they invited themselves into my house. 'You have a beautiful house,' one said dutifully as she ushered herself in. She was Paris, I knew. (Though that's not her real name, of course.) I had a vague notion that my youngest son had arranged a play date with Paris that evening, and assumed her mother had simply sent the sister along, as well. I asked the sister for her name. She said it was Nicole, then politely asked for my name. I said it was 'Miss Zuh-pay-duh.' I rolled with their sudden appearance, figuring it was a suburban thing."

Veejane's bra committed suicide, disintegrating right on her body! "WTF! When your bosomal area starts making odd, quiet squeaky noises, do you expect to raise your shirt (I am in private) and discover that both layers of the fabric in the left cup (and left cup only!) is disintegrating, right at your very touch?"

I've had a few bras develop holes in the fabric after years of wear (I handwash and airdry only) but not fall apart in that way! I'll be sorry when they all fail, since I think Lane Bryant doesn't make this seamless-cup underwire Sheerwear style any more. My bra shopping in the year 2000.

Wednesday, September 20, it's the Seattle Weblog Meetup! Start time is 7 pm, location is Ralph's Grocery and Deli, 2035 4th Ave, in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood, diagonally across from the Cinerama. Free WiFi, plus food and drink are available (you can buy anything in the store and consume it in the deli area, so that includes wine and beer if you want). Local and visiting webloggers talk about blog topics and lots else. I hope to see you there! Parking can be tight in the neighborhood but I usually find a space on Sixth or pay to park in the Warwick Hotel garage across the street for five bucks.

Girlhacker tells the story of Ursula K. Le Guin, Hayao Miyazaki, and his son Goro. Goro has directed his first film, "Gedo Senki", based on Le Guin's Earthsea series (her account of this). "A new correspondence with Studio Ghibli began and she gave her consent to a film but was soon disappointed to learn that Goro would be taking over the film. His father was completely uninvolved. Le Guin's review of the resulting film seems disappointed, but not entirely negative. She knows that much worse has resulted from film adaptations and, more pointedly, the SciFi Channel's TV adaptation."

I'm so pleased that Turner Classic Movies is rerunning some classic (doh!) interviews that Dick Cavett did with Hollywood stars during the sixties and seventies on the different talk shows he hosted, along with at least one new one with Mel Brooks. If you don't get TCM, they'll be available on DVD also. The shows will be running Thursday evenings in September and October.

One of my favorite books is Cavett's autobiography called Cavett -- it made me weep with laughter even after many rereadings. I must get another copy! I think my old one just fell apart.

Miss Samantha, of Lessons from the Kissing Booth and Seattle Metroblogging fame, is having a birthday today. I don't know how old she is, but compared to me she's a young pup still. Samantha has attended the Seattle Weblog Meetup for a long time! Look for her at the zoo today.

I've often wished that Microsoft cafeterias were open to the public, especially since I moved to a place right across the street from the main campus. The next best thing is this blog that documents a tour of MS cafeterias by a group of MS employees, Microsoft Cafeteria Tour 2006. There are lots of variations between the various buildings, and special menus that might only be available in a few places. Pasta Ya Gotcha was always mysteriously popular when I was contracting at MS -- tasty, sure, but not worth waiting in line for when I was getting paid by the hour!

The blog includes video clips as well as first-person reports. Via Heather Leigh.
