Dark Convictions

Fan the sinking flame of hilarity with the wing of friendship; and pass the rosy wine.
-- Charles Dickens

Two weeks of the festival have gone by! While it's happening, it seems like this should be the pattern of life: get up, go to work, go to movies, go to bed. This evening was a good one all round.

  • The Super Wife
I love German comedies! We have had a bunch at the festival over the years, from Men to one that was about acting students, to one that was about a cartoonist, to Schtonk! about the forged Hitler diaries. That last was hysterical, and has never had a regular American release. That's why I go to the festival, to see the movies I wouldnt' see any other way! The Super Wife is about a woman with two kids and an absent husband, who gets divorced "by accident." She writes her life story per her attorney's request, and it becomes a best seller. Very funny and nice, but a little strained at the end. The ending is the most difficult part of a comedy.
  • Love Serenade
This Australian dark comedy is my top movie so far from the festival. Completely quirky and unexpected! Two sisters in a rural small town become interested in the sleazy DJ who moves in next door. The cinematography really made use of the wide screen, the cast was wonderful, and the story moved in unexpected ways. I really liked the Barry White soundtrack.
  • Crocodile Tears
This local production was very good! A man agrees to a demonic bargain to get free of HIV. Nice to see the Seattle scenery and local actors, but I think this would interest folks regardless of where they lived.
  • While I was fanning myself with my Pier 1 fan, A--- and I came up with the idea of buying some for next year, decorating them with appropriate imagery, and giving them to our film festival buddies. The Egyptian and Harvard Exit are always hot and humid if there is any sort of a crowd. This would be an item of memorabilia that would actually get used!
