No Latin Word for Tea

The color is black, the material is leather, the seduction is beauty, the justification is honesty, the aim is ecstasy, the fantasy is death.

I found a message on my answering machine that my car was ready for pickup, so my original plan for the day was to retrieve it during the afternoon and go to the Guild 45th, which is in Wallingford, a whole other area of the city, for the 6:30 show. But I met my friend W--- at the first movie of the day, and she mentioned that she was seeing J--- at 3 PM at the Kuan-yin tea house. The tea house is one block from the Guild! I hadn't seen J--- for a while (She has been taking classes at the U.W. this past year, so has missed our book club.) so I decided to pick up my car Monday morning, and "go with" to join their gettogether for a while.

Is "go with", as a phrase, common in most areas of the country? I think I first heard in in 1991, and I have heard it on TV since, but I know we didn't say it growing up. One might say, "Do you want to go with us?", but not "Do you want to go with?"

  • When the Cat's Away
Pleasant, slight, French comedy. A young woman's cat is missing when she returns from vacation, so her efforts to find it connect her to the neighborhood. Wonderful cast, especially the network of old ladies that keep tabs on anything happening. They take the girl under their wing.
  • So off for tea with W--- and J---. Too bad I am not fond of tea, so I had water and a humbao. It was great to exchange gossip with J--- about folks we know at work, and get caught up on her news. W--- and J--- were planning a camping trip in a few weeks. Good thing it's a car camping trip, because they are bringing a lot of stuff!

I found A---- coming out of the Guild, so we went to dinner at Goldie's, by my choice. Goldie's is a bar I like, because they have pinball machines there, but after going through changes over the years they only have four left! Darts, pool tables and pull-tab gambling have taken over far too much space. There is an item on the menu at Goldie's that I really like, but which must be considered a guilty pleasure: the Husky Burger (named after the University of Washington mascot). This is a regular cheeseburger with fries, with the addition of a sliced and grilled hotlink sausage on top! Total overkill, but I love it!

So that's what I ordered for dinner, and recieved without a problem. A----'s barbecued chicken was transmogrified into chicken fajitas through a kitchen mistake, but it turned out ok since the fajitas tasted fine.

My friend D--- V--- is working for the festival, managing the Guild 45th venue! I was surprised to see him! It's a temporary job, just for the three weeks of the festival, but he seemed to be having fun.

  • The God of Cookery
Very funny Hong Kong comedy by Stephen Chiau. Martial arts and culinary humor, high energy and a lot of fun. Any sort of physical defect is grist for his comedy mill, though, and the ugliness of the woman that helps the hero is a big point in the movie.
  • A---- figured out a bus connection that would take us back to Capitol Hill in time for the 9:15 movie. It was a risk, because if the next movie was popular and we were late, we could have been shut out! But it was worth trying, because this was that movie's only showing in the festival. We chatted with other film goers along the way, and did make it in time. In fact we got the prime seats that A--- likes, in the front row of the balcony.

  • Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist
A truly unusual documentary, very intimate and personal. Director Kirby Dick filmed Flanagan for several years, and combined this footage with existing video and film of Flanagan. Very powerful, very graphic. Am I desensitized by what I read and see on the net? I wasn't as horrified by some of the extreme things he did to himself as A--- was. Highly recommended!
