Relentless Survivors

There are things you just can't do in life. You can't beat the phone company, you can't make a waiter see you until he's ready to see you, and you can't go home again.

So when I came home last night and tried to update my web site, the phone was turned off! How humiliating, especially because I have the money, I just neglect to send in the checks!

So at work today I called the phone company to find out the locations where they accept payments in person. There aren't very many, and apparently a bunch have just closed. Lake City was my destination of choice, in the north part of Seattle. When I got to the store, there was a sign saying that tomorrow would be their last day to accept phone bill payments.

Then a suprisingly smooth drive back to Capitol Hill, because I stayed off the highway.

  • The Emperor's Shadow
A historical epic of early China. A king aspiring to be the first emperor (emperor is hard to spell!) and the son of his wet-nurse, a musician, are obsessed with each other. I was wishing this were over, and it's hard to tell if the anthems composed by the musician are as great as they kept saying. It was interesting to see such an early period depicted, but I covered my eyes during the graphic violence.
  • Supermarket Woman
Superb! This was really funny and energetic, and Juzo (Tampopo) Itami always writes such great parts for his wife. I was amazed by the truck at at the end, covered with lights and chrome. It looked like a transformer truck! When a discount grocery store opens up, will "Honest Goro's" survive? The manager meets a childhood friend, a housewife who knows what makes a good grocery store.
