The Sleepers and the Shadows

Good critical writing is measured by the perception and evaluation of the subject; bad critical writing by the necessity of maintaining the professional standing of the critic.
-- Raymond Chandler

It was soo nice sleeping late today. R--- had the duty of going to get in line early for the secret festival. A--- says he is debating whether to get the Secret festival ticket next year. Out of four films, two were exceptional and two ok, but going to the secret means there are several films that one must miss, and you have to get in line early. But the chance of seeing something that is unavailable anywhere else is still tempting!

  • Secret Festival 4
XXXX XX X XXXX. XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXX XXXX XXXXX. XXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXX XXX XXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXXXX. XX XXXX XXX XXXX XX XX XXX XXXXX XXX XXXX XXX XXXXX.
  • Defying Gravity
This was the first independent low-budget film in the festival that really looked low-budget to me. A drama about a frat-boy who comes to realize that he's in love with the frat brother he's been sleeping with, and that that may mean that he's gay! Routine. It's the sound mix that made this seem low-budget. I noticed the silence in interior scenes, instead of the carefully mixed ambient sound that we take for granted nowadays.
  • After two slices of Rocket pizza (who ever thought of potatoes on pizza? I didn't hate it, but it really didn't add anything.) I decided to skip the evening movies, and skip the closing party. I really wanted to be home recharging my batteries. Enough is as good as a feast!

The results from the fool serious awards were handed out today. All the full series pass holders (that want to) rate all the movies they see, on a scale from Most Favorite (+4) to Least Favorite (-4). Then a crew of volunteers collect the ballots Saturday night, and stay up all night munging the data. The results of this are far more interesting and significant of the festival than the offical Golden Space Needle awards. No ballot box stuffing! Any film that gets 80% positive ratings, and is seen by fewer than half the voters, is rated a "Sleeper" and is worth keeping an eye out for. I've marked these with an asterisk.

These got the most votes in the "most favorite" category.

If you want to see a fool serious web site, go to http://www.az.com/~rox/ and give these guys feedback.

Looking back over the festival, I rate it more positively than 1996. There were several films that I gave the highest rating to, and I only rated a few negatively. I like using the Broadway Performance Hall as a venue, since it makes switching between it and the Egyptian very easy.

I'd like to go back and make an index to the films I saw, a lookup table to find them by name, rather than having to browse through the individual diary entries. I'll probably also write at more length about some of them. (Mentioning this means I'm far more likely to do it!)

I didn't mention yesterday that at Vanguard I talked with someone who has been a volunteer at the festival in years past. He now works at a very well-respected local video store. When I innocently asked him if he had seen any movies at the festival this year, he went off into a rant about the evilness of the festival management, how there were no films he wanted to see anyway, how full-series pass holders just got a pass because they wanted an excuse to bitch about every film they saw.... Yikes! I was just trying to make conversation!
