Logicians may reason about abstractions. But the great mass of men must have images. The strong tendency of the multitude in all ages and nations to idolatry can be explained on no other principle.

Today was a coworker's first day as a "real" Microsoft employee. He had been a contractor up till now. His first day was spent at orientation, although he is certainly already oriented as to how things work around here. He has been moved to an office which he'll be sharing with only one other person! He is only sharing because in the summertime we have interns in the building, so we are sort of short on office space. The normal situation is for full-time employees not to share.
I sewed a striped vest for my nephew J--- to wear in the parade. Very cute, if I do say so myself. Then I proceeded to fool around with Microsoft Image Composer, when I should have kept working on the parade stuff. After all, I'll still have the software even after the parade!
IC makes it very easy to create and adapt images. I did a set of spheres that could be used for navigation, using an image of a pink scarf. It's a snap to extract a square bit of the large image, morph it into a circle, apply an intensity gradient for the highlight, then apply the arrow graphic, also warped to appear bulgy and color-treated to blend with the sphere.
But I have mixed feelings about moving away from text-based navigation. Graphics take time to load, and do they really add value to the site? hmmmm.
