A Real Picnic on a Blanket

To sit in the shade on a fine day, and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment.

Poetry and rhymes are very important to my four-year-old nephew B-----. My sister read to him on the plane from the magazine Spider, which was really intended for my older nephew, and he was so taken with a poem that mention "cool river mud" that he asked for it to be read to him several times, and asked if there would be a brook in Delaware where he could play in the water.

So after the cousins from Virginia left, we took the big van to another state park, Brandywine State Park. This place met B----'s requirements for a brook to play in, even if there were more rocks than mud and more minnows than tadpoles.

In the afternoon we had quiet time, with a video, "Baby's Day Out", which wouldn't be to my taste, but suited all four boys down to the ground. Much laughter and giggling came from the family room, while my sister B---- went and took a nap.

This was a day for fulfilling my nephew B---'s requests, it turns out. Another wish of his is to have a picnic sitting on a blanket, like you see in books, instead of always using a picnic table. Every time my sister would take him on a picnic or to a park, he would ask, "Are we going to eat at a table? I want to eat on a blanket." So attending a concert at Bellevue State Park seemed like a very good night to make his dream come true.

We stopped at Boston Market for chicken, then drove back to Bellevue State Park where we were yesterday. We were there an hour before the concert was supposed to start in an outdoor amphitheater, and the entire audience present consisted of five seniors in lawn chairs and us. By the time the music began the place was pretty filled up, though.

"FPCheer" turned out to be a husband and wife vocal team, with him on guitar, singing patriotic and folky favorites in a middle of the road style. The sound quality was distorting all over the place, but it was pleasant enough on a summer evening, and the weather was beautiful. We were in the front row on our blanket, and the kids were rolling in the grass in front of us.

Tomorrow we are going camping, so no new entries for a few days.
