All Presidents start out to run a crusade but after a couple of years they find they are running something less heroic and much more intractable: namely the presidency. The people are well cured by then of election fever, during which they think they are choosing Moses. In the third year, they look on the man as a sinner and a bumbler and begin to poke around for rumours of another Messiah. |

I had a satisfying chat with my manager today, plus a thank-you note from someone that I was able to help. Very gratifying!
When I made the decision to take I-90 home, I was making the best of two bad alternatives, so when I saw the big readerboard sign over the highway saying there was an accident on Mercer Island, I decided to bail and go to the movies at Factoria. I figured I'd see whatever started at five or shortly after.
The Factoria area is not set up for walking at all. If you park in one area, you have a tough time walking to any other stores or restauants. No wonder the traffic is always jammed there!
I saw Air Force One. Great fun! But a distressing number of people held with guns to their heads, then shot. Scenes of people begging for their lives is one of my least favorite things in movies. It squicks me much more than gun fights or outright violence. There's a scene at the beginning of 48 Hours like that, and One False Move. Creeps me out!
There's a lot of wish-fulfillment in this movie. Not only is the President an honorable man, he is also a Medal of Honor winner and flew missions in Viet Nam! Harrison Ford is always great when he is pissed off. That's his most characteristic expression, like William Hurt is best when he is depressed and low-key.
Please, no more Die Hard movies. I think we have seen every possible combination.

At home I started reading an online journal that is up for critique on a mailing list next week. (I am already very familiar with both journals up for review this week.) The author of the journal is a software developer, and he is in a very familiar environment. So far (I went back to the beginning, and he's been journaling for two years!) he seems like someone I would know.
