We have not the reverent feeling for the rainbow that a savage has, because we know how it is made. We have lost as much as we gained by prying into that matter. |

Tonight I saw a rainbow, surprised by it after turning the corner at the shopping center. I have seen many more rainbows in the time since I have lived in Seattle than in the rest of my lifetime put together. The right weather conditions of sunshine and rain just occur much more often here. I disagree with Mark Twain that we lose anything by understanding the phenomenon. It's possible to understand and appreciate it aesthetically and intellectualy.

I was in machine hell yesterday, with my main machine messed up by a failed install. Scary! So I was blocked on my regular work, and had to piddle around on my second machine, not doing the things that I needed most to be doing. At the end of the day the special team that helps us out when these things happen (and they do occur when we are dogfooding our own products) came down to the bay and started to work on restoring http://anita/ to the ranks of functioning machines.
I had to leave before they were done, because I and another woman were going to the monthly Cacophony dance event. B--- is working as a web tester at Microsoft, and had found the Cacophony page by a web search. Traffic was not bad, so B--- and I got there in plenty of time. We had hoped for more people to join us for dinner, but had a nice chat anyway. I brought leftovers from Sunday, which were great!
We had a lot of fun dancing. Some old friends turned up, and some folks I know from other contexts. The power outlets were turned off, perhaps because this was a Monday evening, so we didn't have the supplemental lights or speakers we would have set up otherwise, but the batteries in the boom box held up fine. Previously we have held this event on Thursdays. It's always interesting changing partners, trying to adapt to their different dance styles. It turned out that B--- lives in the same Eastside building as one of our regular dancers! And they say Seattle isn't a small town.

So this morning I was very pleased to see that the strike team had been able to restore my machine to a usable state! So I didn't have to spend the day reinstalling every application and tool on my machine. Instead I addressed bugs.
