When to Pant
Thursday, October 16, 1997
We had a big meeting today of our immediate team (about 75 people, developers, testers, and program managers). The new lead gave a presentation about his vision of what we might be working on next. Interesting stuff!
He is French, and has a bit of an accent. When talking about an idea for a component that would work with our product, he said something about "pant events." "We'll let the XXX know when to pant," he went on. I was puzzled, until I realized he was talking about paint events, and letting another component take over part of the screen. I prefer "Pant Events"!

I stopped at Costco, the big warehouse store, after work, to get some supplies for the weekend. (We are going to a cabin to celebrate my sister's fortieth birthday.) I had a new food item for a snack before going into the store. Never go into a foodstore hungry! I grabbed what they called a "Chicken Bake," a rolled-up pita with chicken, bacon and caesar dressing. Yum!
I restrained myself and didn't get anything that was for me personally. I got veggies, a fancy torte, red grapes and dried fruit, and the ingredients for chilaquiles. Chilaquiles, as made by me, turn out to be like Mexican Lasagna: tortilla chips layered with a tomato-green chili sauce and grated cheese, then milk and yogurt is poured over and the whole baked. That will be tomorrow's dinner.

Tonight was the fourth of five in my dance lesson series. I danced with one of the teachers for the first time, since we were a lead short. She said I was doing well, which is good. I think I'll continue in the next session. We've learned quite a series of moves: Inside Turn, Outside Turn, Lead's turn, Close position into a swingout, Lead's turn going to right hands, then behind the back, She-He turn, etc. We feel competitive with the Wednesday night classes who get six sessions, so we work hard to keep up with them.
I extended the exercise value of the class by walking there and back, since it isn't very far at all. A good chance to peek into the windows of those who don't care about drawing the blinds, and critique their decor.
Wally Glenn's TV show was on when I got home, but rather than the funny topics he normally covers, he was talking about the initiatives that will be on the ballot in November. I find the gun control discussions a mite tedious. But usually his show is great!

Boston Market is touting their new "Double Marinated" Chicken. Am I the only one who thinks of "Double Secret Probation" from Animal House upon hearing this?
