One cannot be always laughing at a man without now and then stumbling on something witty.

First Impressions

Tuesday, October 28, 1997

I was checking on Henry Churchyard's Jane Austen page today (page! what an understatement!), and found that it had moved from the academic home it had before, to a new domain: The Republic of Pemberley, at http://www.pemberley.com/. If you enjoy Jane Austen as I do, this is the spot! They have web-based threaded discussion groups for the novels and their adaptations, fan fiction (some of it very good!), and on and on.

But apparently the most fervent Colin Firth (Mr. Darcy in the latest Pride and Prejudice adaptation) obsessers have moved to the Spring, the drool conference, topic 53. I found posts there that had been written as odes to every object that he was associated with in P&P (partial list):

  • His Ring
  • His Dent
  • His Pemberley Breeches
  • His Wet Shirt
  • His Writing Quill
  • His Fencing Foil
  • His Riding Crop
  • His Pool Cue
  • His Wine Goblet
  • His Bath Towel
  • His Boots
  • His Bathrobe
  • His Black Horse
  • His Riding Gloves
  • His Great Coat
  • His Netherfield Evening Clothes
  • His Walking Cane
  • His Carriage(s)
  • His Billiard Room Waistcoat
  • etc...

I don't think I ever got this deep, even in the deepest media crush I ever felt! And while I like CF, it isn't just him that appeals to me in this six-hour series. It's the whole thing: the production values, the time allowed to subsidiary characters, the witty script that preserves so much of the original dialog, the great music. I'll have to watch it again, next week!

Tomorrow is the "party" night of my dance class, and Thursday I need to work on costumes for the Trollsylvanians on Halloween. (Procrastination, my besetting flaw!).
