Orycon III

I am not much an advocate for traveling, and I observe that men run away to other countries because they are not good in their own, and run back to their own because they pass for nothing in the new places. For the most part, only the light characters travel. Who are you that have no task to keep you at home?

Sunday: Luke and I had breakfast with Vicki Jean at Waddles, a funky diner on Hayden Island. And yes, we talked about you, and you, and you! We exchanged views on why we write, how we write, the email we get. Before we knew it, two hours had been whiled away!

After lunch I waited in line with Luke and Alan Bostick, and managed to buy my membership for next year's Orycon 20, and to give Alan money for my membership in Potlatch 7! Only my lackadaisicalness had stopped me from getting my Potlatch membership before. Usually I get it at the previous con, but either I had been too busy working at Potlatch 6, or they hadn't been ready to accept money. Luke and I were surprised to realize that Alan wasn't really in line; he was just keeping us company and chatting with us.

I went to a panel on Selling on the Information superhighway: Why sex sells everywhere. A panel discussion can be like a newsgroup, with the panelists as the most prominent posters, and comments from the floor as occasional posters. When one audience member tries to dominate with a lot of off-topic, incorrect comments, it's like having an obnoxious troll in the newsgroup. Since only a couple of the panelists knew what they were talking about, I left before it was over and went across the hall to wait for the next program item.

The next item was the Editor Guest of Honor (GOH) Interview, with Patrick Nielsen Hayden and Teresa Nielsen Hayden interviewed by Tom Whitmore. They had lots of interesting tales about the intersection of their fannish and professional lives, and changes in the publishing industry and book distribution systems.

After buying a bird skull wrapped in wire at the art show, I hung out for an hour in the fan lounge. Finally it was time to go. As I was driving north, I got quite a clear view of Mount St. Helen. Usually when I'm driving in that direction, it's raining or foggy, but that day the clear late afternoon sunshine brought out the volcano in high relief.

It's good to go away, and it's good to go back home. I really enjoyed the weekend. I'm big on group solidaritiy, and so many Seattle fans go to Orycon that I am drawn there too. So many friends come from the Bay area and farther. It's about 1600 members, by far the biggest con I go to, but the key to my enjoyment is to find the con within the con that is congenial for me.
