It was a Sunday afternoon, wet and cheerless; and a duller spectacle this earth of ours has not to show than a rainy Sunday in London. |

I took the plunge today, and installed IE4.0, which is the product I work on. I'd had a CD to install from, but hadn't had the time to do it till now. It went without a hitch, of course! I recommend it to anyone with a modern machine.
I even took a bigger step, and imported my mail from Eudora into Outlook Express. This will probably change my online life more! Since the version of Eudora I was using was an old, free version, OE has a lot more in terms of filtering, so I'll experiment with piping the mailing lists I am on into their own folders. I still don't approve of HTML in mail or usenet, though. I was shocked, shocked! to find out the other night (or be reminded?) that Denys didn't agree with me on this topic. I'm an HTML snob on the web, but I think it should stay on the web! It does disturb me to find out that friends have what I consider unjustifiable opinions in various areas, but I'm not thrilled by extended debates.
Looking at my sent mail folder showed me that I've been on rra-l for two years! That's a long time in online world time. I do like having old mail; looking at it is like a little nostalgia trip!

In the late afternoon I walked down to Broadway and went to Twice Sold Tales. When I left the house it wasn't raining, but by the time I got down the hill, it sure was! I got what looks like an interesting biography of Anthony Trollope, by (wonderful name) Victoria Glendinning. Then I walked to the Noodle Studio for dinner. I was thinking of the great chow fun (wide rice noodles) that Jon Singer introduced me to at the New Saigon when we were working together, so I orded a dish that seemed similar. But the dish they brought me did not have enough noodles! It was totally pouring when I left the restaurant, but I took the bus back up the hill so I wasn't soaked.
