Slackage

It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do. There is no fun in doing nothing when you have nothing to do. Wasting time is merely an occupation then, and a most exhausting one. Idleness, like kisses, to be sweet must be stolen.

Sunday, November 30, 1997

This was a weekend where I did not get done what I needed to get done, due entirely to me not doing it!

During the day on Saturday, I installed Publisher 97. The first time, something went wrong, I believe because I hit a key on the keyboard by mistake during setup. Even though I cancelled out of the dialog, it messed something up. Finally I set it up again and this time it "took." I really feel for customers who have computer troubles! I needed Publisher to do the paper version of Machination, the Cacophony newsletter, which it is my task to prepare this month.

Saturday evening I went to a Cacophony event, sponsored by Christina and Tobin, Golden Turkeys II: Thanksgiving Leftovers. This showing of bad movie clips was fun, but I was puzzled by some of the choices people made to bring.

After we saw all the clips there were, we decided (because of my lobbying) to watch one of the movies all the way through. Cold Comfort Farm, to my mind, isn't a "bad" movie at all! In fact, I like it very much! So we watched the whole thing, and people did laugh.

Sunday I needed to buy the book for my next bookclub meeting which takes place December 1, Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively. I drove up to Northgate Mall, but neither bookstore had it! It had been a while since I was at that mall, so I started wandering around and checking out the new stores. I'm in the early stages of buying some new shoes, so that means looking at the shoes in various stores and getting an idea of what is available. I'm not yet ready to try on. I want to buy some shoes for dancing, and some shoes to wear with jeans. My current footgear: black lace-up boots for dancing, and Teva-style Flo-jo brand sandals for other times. It's getting too chilly for sandals, even with polar fleece socks!

I bought several books, even though they didn't have the book I needed. I always get Mary Balogh's books whenever I see them. She's incredibly prolific, yet keeps the quality right up there. The mistake I made was in starting to read her new one while eating lunch at the new foodcourt. I found I couldn't resist continuing the book after I got home! I also treated myself to new hair gadgets. I'm a sucker for these things, clips or bows or patented devices that make it easier to put one's hair up in various ways. I've been reading on a dance web page that long hair isn't good when a follow is spinning around; it could get in a partner's eye and hurt!

I dragged myself away from the mall and went to another mall, University Village, which has a large Barnes and Noble. I was sure they'd have the book I needed. They were just recovering from a fire alarm when I arrived (which seems to be a theme in my life currently). I went in, got the book, and got out. I was then waylaid by the drug store, where I got -- more hair thingies!

So when I got home, I lounged on the bed reading a romance novel, instead of either reading my bookclub book, or doing the newsletter, or updating my journal. Sheesh! I finally got the newsletter written, but far later than I wished.
