New Year's Eve

The only way to spend New Year's Eve is either quietly with friends or in a brothel. Otherwise when the evening ends and people pair off, someone is bound to be left in tears.

I was doing a search on my name at Alta Vista, to demonstrate to a friend that even if I weren't available to tell him my URL, he could find it on the web for himself. Teach a man to fish.... While working my way through the links, I saw a mystery page: a text archive of an early digital story collaboration (warning, huge file size!) from the Well, from 1994!

Turns out that my buddy Luke had forwarded the text of Machination, the Cacophony newsletter, from July 1994. I was happy to find this, because I no longer had a copy. So now I can add it to the archive. Four years of Seattle Cacophony! It actually got started in the fall of 1993, and I got involved in early 1994.

In another random web surfing note, I was reading a local columnist, Clark Humphrey, who came out with his end-of-year Insville and Outski list. Lots of humorous predictions. But I was amazed to see this:

Insville: What're Ya Talkin' About, Sherman?
Outski: Don't Quote Me On This!

I immediately sent mail to Wally Glenn, both at his home and work addresses. We howled with laughter on the phone. Out before you were ever in! But it's an honor just to be nominated. I'll admit that I haven't seen the "Insville" public access show named above. But shouldn't it be called "Watchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?"? (Stringing punctuation together for the benefit of Andrew.)

Contrary to rumor, Wally (who did not die -- Dicken's Christmas Carol reference) isn't taking his whole web site down in an Elly-esque or Heinovistic maneuver. He is merely changing the name, format and URL of his journal.

The evening was quiet; I watched that Barbra Streisand movie with Jeff Bridges, The Mirror Has Two Faces. Not recommended. That's why I hadn't watched it till now; I'm not a huge fan. Her character is ok; his is annoying.
