ShoppingThere is no pleasure to me without communication: there is not so much as a sprightly thought comes into my mind that it does not grieve me to have produced alone, and that I have no one to tell it to. Monday, February 9, 1998 I had a nice talk with my former manager this afternoon. She is leaving/has left Microsoft, but is taking a long time to pack up her office. I think this is the third time she has come in to pack up stuff, or do computer things. I enjoyed sharing with her about what I've been up to. She's been reading it on the web, of course, but I was surprised to hear that her husband (an NT developer) was reading, too! "Highlander, gaming; oh, yeah, he's a gaming geek," he exclaimed, according to her. It was very pleasant going over the details with someone who knows me so well.
I stopped off at the Bellevue Square shopping mall after work, to buy those new bras I've been wanting. I never buy just one thing! I got several sets in interesting colors and fabrics. I also picked up a shortish denim skirt and black top, just the thing if someone should want to go clubbing. My last purchase was a dress and jacket, made out of a slinky blue knit. This fabric moves so beautifully, I can't wait to go dancing in it! I really like the way it drapes, and the smooth feel of it. From the clothing store, I went out into the mall. I saw my friend Jessica (from the MS Bookclub, her husband Wes works at Microsoft) at the Coach leather store where she works. I've been a leather snob ever since my sister worked at Georgetown Leather when she was in high school. I have a Coach bag that is probably twenty years old or more. Those purses wear forever, and I like the simple style of the design, and the buttery texture of the skins they are made from. At a book club meeting, when Jessica saw how worn the binding around the edges was on my purse, she told me that Coach would remake it for a nominal fee. So tonight I stopped into her store, dumped the contents of my purse into a paper bag, and sent my purse off to be renewed. Seven bucks! Such a deal! So I went off to find a purse to use during the seven weeks it will take for the work to be done. I bought a "bad girl" bag at an accessories store, a small black purse that should be fun to use while my own is out of reach. And I got another hair accessory, of course! A wire-and-beads thing meant to cover a chignon, in my favorite dark irridescent coloring.
A mailing list that has been largely inoffensive till now, RRC-l (the Romance Readers' Cafe is a social chat list for members of rra-l, which is supposed to be book talk only) has become a high traffic list. The content is now composed of boring talk about favorite and least favorite foods and tv shows, and equally boring debate about the latest political scandals. Tonight I need to do an inbox filtering rule to send these messages straight into their own folder. I already do this for several other lists I belong to, but this list didn't need it till now.
