Thrift ShoppingI have three kinds of friends: those who love me, those who pay no attention to me, and those who detest me. Wednesday, February 25, 1998 I was listening today to my "vintage" recording of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing Schubert's Die Winterreise (the Winter's Journey). I played through it once, then I realized how sad it was making me! I'm glad I don't understand all of the German, or I'd have been weeping at my desk. I only know opera German, so I'd say I can understand about half without looking at the written translation. I do love his voice, though! So I changed to Jan DeGaetani's Songs of America. After writing the above, I did a search to find a good link for Fischer-Dieskau. I didn't find one (maybe sopranos have the rabid fans that would create such web pages) but I did find a really great opera site: The Virtual Opera House. (You may get an error on the first page; just choose a link from the side frame and all will be well.)
My sister came by early this morning to pick up something from me, and I asked her to do me the favor of taking my zines to the post office. (I'm talking about the print version of this journal, in case you forgot.) I had the envelopes adressed and stuffed, but I didn't know how much postage to put on (and a few are going overseas). I'm glad to have sent them off; but I do have copies left which are available on request.
At work today, there were stirrings from one of the program managers on our team, about making our specs (documents where we specify the technical details of the product we are working on) look exactly like those from the rest of the product team. I'm not in favor of this, and not just because it would involve work for me! The other parts of the team have docs that are not that technical, but ours are very much so. Also, when my boss and I examined the docs that have been posted by the other sub-teams, it was evident that there isn't that much uniformity there anyway. So I think I've convinced her to leave that alone for now. But I did change the navigation frame on our own team website. It now uses Dynamic HTML to expand and collapse the outline branches, in a very cool way! I can't take credit for the code; I just copied it from our main team site.
I had a good time in dance class at the Century Ballroom tonight. It's pleasant repeating the beginning Lindy class, since I am now so perfectly capable of doing the steps! The advanced swing is a challenge, but I think I did a bit better than last week. I know I didn't step on my own toes quite so often. In the break time between the class and the dance, I walked over to Value Village, the thrift store that is a block away from the Ballroom. I'd be much more likely to visit this store if there wasn't a strong odor of creosote permeating the entire establishment! I did find a shirt that might do for a friend, and a cool shirt for myself, a patchwork of Indonesian prints. I also found one of those cool gauzy skirts in a bright floral print of red, rust, and old gold. My friends Denys Howard and Karrie Dunning came to the dance, after their dance lesson at another studio across town. It was fun chatting with them and getting caught up on things. Denys has a very enthusiastic laugh, and he frequently finds me funny. He isn't a regular reader of this journal, so I promised to send him the links to some key recent entries. The lindy lesson at intermission covered various methods of "boogie-ing." It isn't easy to clap, kick and hop, all at the same time!
