Cacophonous

Society is a masked ball, where every one hides his real character, and reveals it by hiding.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Wednesday, March 4, 1998

I updated the Seattle Cacophony Society pages tonight, adding the March issue of Machination, our newsletter. This isn't the latest in the month that I have gotten this taken care of, but I like to do it as early as possible. This month I'll be sponsoring a Trollsylvanian event, and working on an RC art car.

Getting involved with this group is one of the best things I have ever done. My friend Luke got me into it, then he went on to other things and I stayed.

One slight irritation is people (not involved with Cacophony) who have ideas about what we should be doing. The events and activities are sponsored by the members who want to do something. Sometimes I get comments from folks I know who think we aren't daring enough, aren't wild enough. My response: "When would you like to sponsor that event?" There are lots of ideas that are fun in theory, but wouldn't be that much fun for us to actually do (or maybe there would be too much work involved). The differences in the people involved are one of the reasons for differences in the Cacophony branches.

In an effort to start thinking about going to Burning Man this year, I'm now subscribed to the burnman-list. It's high traffic and high noise, but it will make some of the names familiar to me, and spark some ideas about schemes, dreams and practicalities. Wally will be going for sure, and other Fremont Arts Council people and Seattle Cacophonista Veektoastia. Maybe I'll convince Luke to go as well! Another friend is very interested too. I should get him to subscribe to the mailing list!

My biggest concern: I don't want to fry! It's in the desert, and you need to bring water and food and shade, and pack your trash out. I really don't do that well in the heat. Going with a group will help in some of these practicalities.

I got my first comments (in writing, at least; people have said nice things to my face) on my printed zine (copies still available upon request). The formerly Admirable Burr said some very nice things, with a promise of a formal letter of comment to come! Now I feel like a trufan! Burr's comments on the rough presentation of most of the zines he has seen makes me wonder, though. That purposely low-fi style is more from the punk or rock zine scene, I think.

Burr's questions about deadlines made me consider when the next issue should come out. I think the year anniversary of Anita's BOD would be a good time to shoot for, in May.
