Old and New
Monday, March 16, 1998 I had lunch today with Valerie Horvath, my former manager who has left Microsoft. She has a personal URL, but she didn't want me to link it yet, since she is still constructing the website. Maybe you can figure it out from her name! I've been giving her tips on the use of Image Composer. We had lunch at the New Saigon, a Vietnamese-Chinese restaurant near the MS campus. When Val and I were working on the gardening CD-ROM, we often ordered food from there. Jon Singer would tell us the good things to get! Today we had pot stickers and the wide rice noodles with chicken (chow fun) that I like so much there. It was lucky she wrote and invited me, since I forgot my purse at home today! When I got to work and realized the mistake, I figured I'd borrow from my current manager, but this way I didn't have to. Val was driving a fancy Porsche, which was a surprise. Usually she drives a substantial Volvo station wagon. I didn't ask whether the Porsche (bright red, of course) was her husband's car or borrowed from somewhere. The most interesting feature was the lack of interior door handles! Val said that that particular model was optimized for racing, so the door handles were replaced with looped straps that performed the same function for less weight. Since she was a few days behind on the journal, I got to tell her in person about Friday's dance contest and the strange "Irish" band I saw on Saturday and the fish dinner on Sunday. We also covered the Sonics (local basketball team) and wearable computers.
I met tonight with someone who contacted me from my yahoo personal ad. When he wrote me, he said he hoped it didn't seem too creepy that there were some parallels between himself and the man I had been dating. Both are younger than myself, both are aspiring writers, and -- get this -- both are named Jason! It did indeed give me a bit of a jolt to see his letter in my inbox! But there aren't any further similarities. To avoid confusion, I'll refer to this new fellow as JB. The cafe where we had arranged to meet was closed, but we caught up with each other in the shop next door, and walked up Pike to another place. A snack and beverage, and a walk up Broadway, made the evening pass very pleasantly. I think we'll be seeing each other again.
My friend Jon Newman has added a new page to his site, featuring his dance exploits. I am glad we've been in class and out dancing together, as well as sharing our film interests. It's been fun getting to know Jon better this year.
