Last Class

The appalling thing is the degree of charity women are capable of. You see it all the time... love lavished on absolute fools. Love's a charity ward, you know.

Dancing was fun on Wednesday night. Have I ever had a bad time at dance class or a dance? Well, sometimes class can be a challenge, or I might have trouble finding partners at a dance, but usually it is a lot of fun! Last night was the last night of this session at the Century Ballroom, so I needed to think about what to do next. I am going to try the Intermediate/Advanced Lindy, as well as continuing with Advanced Swing. I had to talk to Hallie (our teacher) about this first, to make sure she thought I could handle it. But I've now gone through Beginning Lindy four times, twice with the Swing Girls at the Century, and twice at the Russian Center on Thursdays. and I'm currently taking Intermediate Lindy at the Russian Center and mean to continue it. So I want to move up. My concern would be that I'm at a level below the other people in class, enough so as to hold them back. I know it will be a challenge!

I have a break between class and the live band that starts at nine thirty, so I went to Cafe Paradisio and had some of the same four-cheese pizza that I had last week. Tasty! Then I went back to the cafe that is attached to the Century Ballroom for dessert. Bad: my first choice, a white cake with buttercream frosting and strawberry filling, had a moldy taste in the filling. Good: the worker gave me a slice of a different cake, and my money back!

The dance was extra good! I know enough people there now to be comfortable hanging out, and I even asked a guy to dance that I didn't know at all! He was sitting by himself, and I wanted to set a good example for my friend Tom Lawrence, whom I was urging to go ask this one or that one. This new partner was a bit difficult for me to follow though; I really couldn't detect a lead most of the time. He said he was new in town, so I told him he found the right place. I also danced with Jeff from last Friday, Sterling from my Thursday night class, and some other folks. Joe, of Green Pajamas fame, was dancing up and down the steps in front of the stage, and when I jokingly accused him of hotdogging, he danced with me and showed me how he was doing it.

I had a nice phone chat with Wally this afternoon. I had forwarded an invitation to join a group going to Entros tomorrow night, and I was amused at how he just went off about his dislike of the place. I liked it fine when I was there, so I was a bit startled at the vehemence of his reaction. The attitude of the place just ticked him off when he was there, I guess. We also discussed the upcoming April Fools journal project, and I got a sneak preview of an in-progress piece of writing by him.

In between work and dance class, I needed to prepare breakfast bags for the homeless men at the overflow shelter that's at the parish center at St. Josephs. So I went to the QFC grocery store in my neighborhood. No room in the parking lot. So I drove to the Safeway on Broadway. No room in the parking lot, again! So I drove to where I should have gone in the first place: the Red Apple independent grocery store two blocks from my house. I bought yogurt, bananas, applesauce, packs of cheese and crackers, and string cheese, then brought the groceries home and assembled them into individual bags. I was under a bit of time pressure, because dance class started at six fifteen!

I dropped off the breakfast bags, and drove one block more to the Russian Center, the community center that is the venue for dance class. Intermediate Lindy was fun! I've done well in that class. It's also been worthwhile repeating the beginning class. There were some steps I just didn't get the first time around, but now I can do them! There was one guy in the class that I swear was drunk! He just seemed so totally out of it!

I was very surprised and pleased to see my friends Kate and Glenn at the dance after class. They were out celebrating Kate's birthday. But it's been a while since Glenn practiced his swing dancing, and he had forgotten large parts of it.

A new journaler in Seattle: Julie's Occasional Cerebrations. Some beautiful digital images! And she reads me, which means she has great taste!
