Reading
Monday, March 30, 1998 Almost the end of the month! Where does the time go? I was peeking around at different free font sites for inspiration for next month's journal design, and thinking about what colors to use. I didn't do any actual work on it, though, and I expect to be busy tomorrow evening, so the April design might not appear on April Fish day. Hmmm. Maybe I should use a fish theme somehow? You do know that the French call April Fool's Day Poisson D'avril, don't you? In between work and my bookclub meeting, I ran errands. I dashed down to Bellevue Square mall to pick up my beautiful Coach bag which I had dropped off to be revamped in February. I also looked for some tap pants style underwear, but none were to be found. Oh, well! I just hope my skirt doesn't fly up too high when I'm twirling and dancing around. I had a fun time at my bookclub meeting tonight, even though only one of us liked the book! As I've mentioned, this month's book was Umberto Eco's The Island of the Day Before. Christina and I were the only regular members there, but my former manager Val and her sister-in-law, and a couple that I met once last summer at a wine tasting, joined us for the first time. We ate at the place that is my preferred setting for such evenings: the Shi-Lin, a Chinese restaurant near work. I like it because the food is good, and they have a large round table for us, and it's usually quiet on Monday nights. Four of us had read the book. I even finished it last night, instead of at the last minute as per usual. But we felt disengaged from the book. There is much erudition crammed into it, but the story is told at so many removes that I couldn't get emotionally involved. There were some good sections. I especially liked the seige description, and the Moby-Dick-style disquistion, on doves instead of whales. I know that there were whole layers of meaning which I didn't even touch on this reading. This annoyed me; I felt put in the wrong as a reader for not liking the book! Whoever had the assigment of bringing books for us to choose for the meeting after next didn't show up, so we had no decisions to make beyond setting the date for the next meeting. I guess we are now on a schedule where we pick the books just one meeting before.
