Schubertiad

Precisely because we do not communicate by singing, a song can be out of place but not out of character; it is just as credible that a stupid person should sing beautifully as that a clever person should do so.
-- W.H. Auden

I notice that there was a spike of hits on this journal yesterday, and apparently there were five or so people reading the whole journal or big chunks of it, starting from the beginning. If that was you, I think that's great! Feel free to let me know what you think. I'd also be interested to know how you found me. It's a different experience catching up like that, than finding a journal that's just starting and reading each entry day by day.

Did anyone see an unusual link to me posted somewhere yesterday? The one thing I wish I had on halcyon.com is referrer logs!

One of the CDs I bought at Half-Price Books last Saturday was from Hyperion, called "An 1815 Schubertiad." This is the twentieth in a very notable series of the complete Schubert songs (and he wrote a lot of songs!), and very pleasant it is.

A Schubertiad was a musical gathering where a number of performers sang his music, usually with the composer himself at the piano. This recording is modeled after such a (hypothetical) evening at the end of 1815, when Schubert was just eighteen years old. He produced an astounding amount of work in that year, sometimes eight or nine songs on one day! All of the pieces on the CD were written in that year. Some of these songs are very familiar to me (Heidenroselein D257), some are new. I especially like the choral drinking songs. Very catchy!

The booklet that comes with the CD is so extensive, I couldn't slide it back into the jewel case after removing it!

Tonight was the first night of the new session of dance classes at the Century Ballroom. I'm repeating advanced swing, which I'll be repeating for the forseeable future. Intermediate Lindy is new to me at this place, and I was a bit concerned about it. I was able to accomplish what was taught tonight, though, so I don't think I'll be holding the class back.

I really enjoyed dancing with Dan tonight. He's called "Fireman" Dan, for some reason. We had lots of room on the floor, the music was a comfortable tempo for me, and Dan has great imagination and style! He said something like "I want to use this floor tonight!" and something about how there was never room to dance down at the Fenix.
