I figured out my taxes tonight. Although my return is very simple and doesn't take long to prepare, I still dread doing it. I've even filed for extensions some years, which is silly when you have to figure out the tax (if you owe) which takes just as long as filling out the return! I just don't like dealing with bureaucracy, and when that combines with a tendency towards procrastination....

But I was able to find the tax forms, and the W-2 and 1099-Div. It really didn't take long at all!

Lynda Bustilloz asked me about Minnesota hot dish, which was on the menu yesterday at Easter dinner. It usually means some sort of starchy casserole, meant for a side dish. In this case, our hostess had gotten two recipes via email from a childhood friend.

  1. frozen hash brown potatoes, eggs, cheese, baked.
  2. eggs and cheese over a layer of mild jalopenos, baked.

Both were good with the ham. I saw one in a movie last year (about two young girls who run away, Manny and Mo ?) that had crushed potato chips as a topping.

Today was the second anniversary of Glassdog.com, Lance Arthur's website. I first ran across Lance before he got his domain name! I remember surfing around while I was working on the Gardening CD-ROM, in the spring of 1996. I came across something called "the World's Fair of the Web." This was some kind of link fest, and Lance's home page was listed among the personal pavilions. I have mail between Lance and me dated March 20, 1996! So I can claim to have known him when.

I admired the look of the site. But the part of the site (and of Glassdog to come) that I liked the best was Lance's personal writing. Then called The Lance Arthur Experience, now Life Serial, it was probably the first periodic personal essay or column that I read on the web.

Lance has always been very gracious about any tech notes or broken links or misspellings I've pointed out to him. (You know I have to do that; I'm the net nag!) He has also borne patiently my ceaseless lobbying for the goodness of Internet Explorer, which started even before I was on the team. (I'm a CSS fan from way back.)

I count Lance as a friend and a colleague. Long may Glassdog wave! As I've said to him many times: Keep up the good work!
