Friday, April 24, 1998 I cleaned up my desk yesterday, because I though I might have a friend visiting me at work. This ended up not happening, but I find I like my new arrangement, with CDs stacked up on an upper shelf between the two computer CPUs. I can see all the titles at a glance. But if I get many more CDs, I'll need a rack! I've already had one incident of knocking down the pile and having to crawl on the floor to grab the discs from under my desk. I got a suggestion from a rather-high-up program manager, on something that we (meaning me) could evangelize to the content providers (jargon for all the varied web page owners on the Microsoft site): use of the HOVER CSS attribute. (Hmm. I should add it to this site!) It would be easy for folks to add, has no effect in browsers that don't support it, and makes pages more dynamic. I was all over this idea right away. I like a project that makes me more visible, both within the team and externally! And I know the most efficient way to reach the intended audience. I'll do a short presentation at the next Online PM meeting, then follow up with email. Oooh! Public speaking! I did help my friend Denys with a presentation for a VB users group in 1996, but I really haven't done that kind of thing too often.
I found my high school boyfriend on the web today! I searched on his name, which isn't an unusual one. One person by that name was an evangelical preacher, which didn't sound like him. But the person who worked at a Bay area law library seemed like a reasonable candidate, since I knew that he had gone to law school. The only personal info on the law library site was a bunch of baby pictures, and the pictures of him didn't resemble my memory, since the focus was on the baby. Then I found one that was very characteristic, and I knew it was him. So I sent him mail, telling a bit about where I am now. I haven't heard back yet, so I won't link to him without permission. He seems to be a computer expert at the library. Funny to think we are both involved with computers now; it was the furthest thing from our minds in high school, before the PC revolution. I do have good memories of him, and his family was always very kind to me! I have recipes I make today that I learned from them. We were the only couple in our intellectual, geeky crowd in high school. We went to different colleges, and drifted apart in pretty short order.
Dance practice was fun at the Savoy Swing Club tonight, but there was a shortage of leads! And some of those that were there only danced with folks that they already knew, the bastards! The footwork that was taught during the lesson was easy enough that I could do it, which is good.
