Metajournals Launch

We always carry out by committee anything in which any one of us alone would be too reasonable to persist.

One year ago: Traveling

I had decided not to get involved in the last-minute work for the Metajournals launch. There was a lot of work to be done, but I was convinced that more people getting involved would only make the process more confusing and muddled. But the blind date I was supposed to have this afternoon got postponed, and the email from the staff list came rolling in. I succumbed, connected to our IRC chat room, and started doing what I could.

There were files that needed formatting. There were problems with versioning, and finding the right server, and seeing the files in their context to make sure we were doing the correct things. The day crept by, and I was still working on this and not on getting my July journal posted.

Finally the higher level staff was ready to throw the switch and take us live. I think that a good deal of the work we did during that day got overwritten somehow, but it all got fixed up later. It's a worthwhile site! Check it out, if you are reading this and somehow hadn't heard about the project before.

I did something unwise this afternoon, which had an unpleasant result. You know those cosmetic products that always urge you do to a patch test before applying? Most of the time I think folks don't do that, and I know I don't. But I really should have, before applying a certain product to my face. I had a bad reaction, with some sore places and blisters! It doesn't look too bad now, but for the next few days, yuck! Too bad about my blind date that got rescheduled till Sunday, but if an imperfect complexion were to put him off completely, he wouldn't be the man for me anyway.

The Savoy Swing club had their monthly dance tonight, at the Russian Center. I put on a cute red dress, white hose, and a blue hair bow, and walked over. The ever-popular Monty Banks and the High Rollers were playing, and I had my share of partners. There was a costume contest that I got convinced to enter myself in, though I don't know if I'd have done it if I'd known that we would have to parade around the room in the center of the hall! I was eliminated in the first round, and Joe Ross won a CD of Lindy music from Sweden. (I don't know how it happened, but Sweden is a hot bed of swing and lindy dancing.)
