Sore Throat

Illness is the night-side of life, a more onerous citizenship. Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.

One year ago: White Teeth, White Hands

Sometimes I take a short break at work, and treat myself by peeking at some particularly favorite journals. But then I don't have a new entry to read when I come home, and I'm ridiculously disappointed!

Something that's happened the past few years in Seattle: Buhner Buzz Day at the Kingdome. To show support for the team, people show up at the stadium and have their heads shaved! They also get into the game free. We had the Cacophony meeting on Tuesday evening, and longtime member Dave Volk showed up wearing a straw hat. When he took it off, his shaved head stunned us all! It really did change his appearance, since he has an abundance of dark, curly hair. The buddy that made him do this buzz-cut thing (a promise foolishly given last year) has a page with pictures of the shaving process.

In self-referential news, Jason reacts to what I said on Monday, and explains a bit about why he is journaling via online means now.

Last night I went with some dance buddies (Dan Ross among them) to get dinner after our dance class. Usually we walk down the street to a local market and deli, but this time we walked up to 15th and ate at the pizza place where we've been before. I was tempted to not go back for more dancing, since it was warm, but I did, and danced until shortly before ten o'clock. That's leaving early, for me! I felt like I was developing a cold, though, so I thought it was best not to push it. This is going to be a busy weekend!

When I got to work this morning (and I felt crappy enough that I considered not coming in at all!) I found a note from my manager. She had read Wednesday's entry about my feeling in a rut. I know she reads sometimes, but I wasn't counting on that to push this issue; I swear I would have said something to her on my own! So we'll have a discussion next week about what to do to increase my value to the team and increase my job satisfaction. Nobody gets respect for working on the team website, though it's more and more important to team functioning in modern software development -- especially when the product is internet-related!

So I worked only a half-day (and if this entry is disjointed, put it to the account of this nasty cold) then drove home via the International District. I'd been promising to go buy a bunch of folding Japanese-style fans and hand them out to my dance buddies, since the one I use makes me a popular person! After a few false starts I did find a store that had the cheap kind I wanted. I bought eight, and I think I'll go back for more soon! I took them with me to the Friday Night Practice of the Savoy Club, and handed most of them out to dance buddies. I want to make using a fan a Seattle trend, at least for the summer! We need it after energetic dancing.

I had wanted to go to the Century Ballroom (8 1/2 Souvenirs are the band) after practice, but thought better of it. I need to get up early for a Cacophony event tomorrow morning, then Fool Serious film stuff in the afternoon, then dancing in the evening. Whew!
