A man may be a pessimistic determinist before lunch and an optimistic believer in the will's freedom after it.

I went back to work today, and spent the day plowing through email to get caught up on the current state of our product. At lunch I sampled the stir-fry station provided by our new food provider. There were two workers with woks, one of whom kept urging us to divide into two lines. I refused! "It's like at the bank; I'll take the next available teller!" I told him! They did have a wide variety of vegetables to choose from, and the guy mistakenly gave me scallops in addition to the beef, which was all to the good. But they just don't have strong enough heat sources for the stir-fry operation itself! Hot plates just aren't cutting it. The food was warmed, but not really cooked, and the black-bean sauce was too salty. Tomorrow it's back to the "Carvery" with the lamb or roast beef.

When I left the parking garage in the afternoon, there was a very timely bulletin on the radio, warning me of a problem on my regular route home. So I turned right instead of left when leaving campus, and took my alternate route home. It's a slightly longer drive, but it's rarely backed up, and it's a pleasant road alongside Lake Sammamish. It occurred to me on the way that this would be a perfect opportunity to stop back at the International District and buy more folding fans to hand out.

I was able to efficiently park at a fifteen-minute meter, find a gift store with the fans I needed, buy twenty of them (they are about a dollar each) and zip on home. (I'll disclose that the meter was slightly expired when I got back to the car, but no ticket, no foul, no harm!)

I ran into Lesley Reece on the bus, on my way downtown. She was going to work at Amazon.com. I gave her a Vanguard report and caught up on other news and gossip.

I went down to the Fenix tonight, under the impression that DJ Hep Jen would be the DJ. Wrong! But instead she was there dancing, along with lots of other friends. The fans were a big hit! I have a few left, but I want to keep giving them out until I think that everyone who would like one, has one. I took a taxi home, pleasantly fatigued.
