Almost everything we call "higher culture" is based on the spiritual-
ization and intensifi-
cation of cruelty -- this is my proposition.... That which constitutes the painful voluptuous-
ness of tragedy is cruelty; that which produces a pleasing effect in so-called tragic pity, indeed fundamentally in everything sublime up to the most highest and most refined thrills of metaphysics, derives its sweetness solely from the ingredient of cruelty mixed in with it.
-- Friedrich Nietzsche

One year ago: Music has Charms

A strange, odds-and-ends kind of day.

I have a newish local correspondent, not met in real life yet. I've crossed online paths with him before, but this time it was through a website devoted to fat acceptance issues. I haven't had anyone write me before who has talked so much about the physical side of me, at least not without meeting me first. A strange sensation!

I wrote a more detailed version of Saturday's journaler gettogether, and posted it with pictures. Of course now I wish I had written it that very day! Instead I had been occupied with going to the grocery store. I also got the Cacophony pages updated tonight. The month is one third over, so I'm a bit late with it, darn it!

[ Net Nag Approved ]There's a good new journal from New Zealand, Beat Happening. This man is a new father and seems to run a table tennis organization. Ping pong, no matter where I look!

This isn't really a "Net Nag recommend" but if you don't have "Cruel Site of the Day" on your daily list, you are missing out on some funny stuff! I really like the site featured today, all about Bad Candy. (Warning! Cheezy midi alert! I didn't know, I swear, since my primary machine at work doesn't have sound capability.) There is a choice link from there to the Gallery of Regrettable Food. God, I love the Web!
