There are some things which cannot be learned quickly, and time, which is all we have, must be paid heavily for their acquiring. They are the very simplest things and because it takes a man's life to know them the little new that each man gets from life is very costly and the only heritage he has to leave.
-- Ernest Hemingway

In Friday's entry, graphic depiction of a dance-related injury! And yesterday was filled with a walk around Greenlake, a meeting of the Fool Serious Folks, and a dance contest. What a giddy whirl!

I'm hoping for some company to come over tomorrow evening, so I devoted today to laundry and cleaning up this place! I did make good progress (and now have many clean clothes, yay!) but there is still more to do. Perhaps I'll do more tomorrow afternoon. Or the whole thing might not happen. (You know that not having things set isn't my favorite state of being, but this time there's no help for it.)

But even if my guest doesn't come over tomorrow, my sister is visiting next week, so I want to get things in control before she comes.

I have succeeded in bringing home a few empty boxes from work, but I haven't yet managed to fill them with books that I want to get rid of.

When thinking about a day like this ahead of time, I always have images of myself staying on task and working steadily for hours and hours. Looking back at the end of the day, I see I didn't do this. I check my email too many times. Laundry takes longer than I think it will, and it interrupts me all day. I discover that I need to walk to the store to get trashbags. I get hungry, eat something, then pick up a book and start reading it. But I did get several chunks of good steady work in.

In a fine example of linkage, Clark Humphrey, a local columnist that I have met once, takes off from a part of the Kama Sutra that isn't sex-related, and lists the skills that a well-educated person should have nowadays. Do you agree with him?
