One year ago: Work Ethic

Yesterday I wrote most of the day, and fixed up the images from the Inanimate Object Bungee Jump. I updated my photos page, too. I felt restless by the end of the day, and decided to walk down the hill to Broadway, to get something to eat. I looked at the sheets at Fred Meyer, but they didn't have a set I liked, so I avoided that purchase. Inspired by Michael Rawdon and the fact that Lois McMaster Bujold is going to be Guest of Honor at Orycon, I stopped in to Twice Sold Tales and scanned the SF shelves for something by her to read during dinner. I picked out Ethan of Athos, about a doctor from a planet of men (men, men, men -- Martin Mull reference). No wonder it appealed to me at the bookstore; I looked over at my bookcase just now and there was the copy I've had for years!

I got some food at the Magic Dragon, then walked back up the hill; of course the bus passed me on the way! During this excursion I was debating whether to go out dancing that night. I finally decided that I would go. I want to support the Century Ballroom as a business, and I could always come home if I felt like it.

So I dressed myself in my new black skirt (brocade-like fabric, short) and black lace top, and walked down the hill. I arrived in time for the last bit of the lesson, and before the band began. The band was Lee Press-on and the Nails, who have been described as "Gomez Addams meets Cab Calloway" by the Marin Independent Journal. It's a fair description, but I'd put the stronger emphasis on the Cab Calloway part. Cab was a fine singer and imaginative showman, and so is Lee! In both cases, the schtick might overshadow the musicianship, but the skills are solidly there.

The crowd was moderate (I hope Hallie broke even on the deal!) but there were enough folks there for me to dance with. I was actually glad to sit down for part of it -- some numbers were super fast! But most were danceable, even if you danced half-time. They ended up with Sing, Sing, Sing, and the crowd was going wild! My repaired dance shoes held up very well, I'm glad to report.

I worked extra hours today, and even stayed until the food was delivered -- Indian! I'm trying to get things done, with deadlines approaching and an office move this Wednesday. I got email letting me know that I'm on the waiting list for Swing Out Northwest. I was disappointed to get this news, but I'll have to hope that enough follows can't go that I'll have a chance to get in. Rats! This is a natural consequence of my procrastination.

I wonder if this journal would read better if I wrote in the dialect of my home state? I like the Dialectizer!
