Great Price

There couldn't be a society of people who didn't dream. They'd be dead in two weeks.

Something trivial that bugs me a bit: I like having the link to my entry from a year ago (though few people follow the link; I can tell from my server logs). When there is no entry from a year ago, I have to comment out the link. I should have had more discipline and written more often, a year ago!

Don't miss my adventures from Friday and Saturday! I weasel my way into a students-only dance, then see a movie.

We are at the peak time of fall color, at least at this low altitude. The plantings on the Microsoft campus really show to good advantage now; brilliant maples in yellow and orange, crimson euonymus (common name: burning bush), all against a background of tall evergreens. Gorgeous! We need to enjoy it while it lasts; one good rainstorm will wash most of the glory away.

I went to work this afternoon, but I was soon blocked by a problem that I couldn't figure out on my own. I wasted some time doing some online stuff, then drove home. As I was driving over the floating bridge, I was thinking about tasks I wanted to accomplish for the rest of the day, when suddenly it came back to me: I'd done laundry and hung it to dry -- last Saturday! I completely forgot about it!

I was in a bit of a pissy mood, so when I stopped at City Peoples Mercantile to get the mousetraps I needed, I bought candles (one smells like leather!), candle holders, and a new sort of scented oil (a blend of rose, petitgrain, sandlewood, cedarwood, and bergamot, and we'll skip over the name). I suppose there are worse things one could buy in a fit of temper.

Instead of hand-washing my rayon print dresses, I machine washed them. You are supposed to be able to do this, but the colors bled so at first, and the washing machines aren't always available at the time I need to do laundry, so I'd been doing them in the sink or in a large plastic tub set in the bathtub (hard on the back!). I felt lucky that both washers were free, so I did a load of bluish fabrics, and a reddish one. It was a lot quicker by machine. Now, if I can only remember that I have a lot of dresses and skirts hanging up in the basement!

My friend Luke McGuff has returned to journaling, with a new journal name, a new design, and a new place to live. I'm glad to see him writing a journal again; I really thought he'd stopped for good, though he said he'd be back. My change-averse nature! It will take time for me to get used to him being apart from Jane.

So check out A Dream at Great Price.

I took the bus downtown to the Showbox, for Zoot Suit Sunday. I have a consistent problem of arriving too early here; I walked around for a few minutes before going inside, so I wasn't the absolute first to arrive. Regular partner Doug was also there early. We both think that some of the best dancing of the night is early, when the floor is empty. Usually I just get one dance with him, but I guess there weren't that many other women there that he wanted to dance with, so we danced three times before the lesson began!

I was tickled to see my friend Jon Newman! We hadn't talked for a few weeks, so we got each other caught up on our lives. (He doesn't read this journal consistently, obviously!) I was surprised how many good lindy dancers were there tonight. There had been a big-name dance workshop over the weekend, and it wouldn't have been surprising if most folks had been danced out. The band was "Two Scoops Combo" whom I've heard before. There was also a tap-dance group performance, a double act from Impresario Dave Atkinson and Hep Jen, and the Savoy Demo group. When I'd been talking to my friend Mike Hern, I hadn't realized that he was part of the group! I think it was his first performance with them. He did very well!

I danced with Dan, Earl, "Up and" Adam, and my buddy (I forget his name, darn it!) who looks like a shaved head Tommy Lee Jones. Lots of others, too! I was wearing my short purple princess-line dress (stars and moons print), with new red stockings that got plenty of compliments. Mark and Holly gave me a ride home.
